Great looking plane! Another coup from Andy!

I have questions:

1. Does the canopy slide open?
2. Is the pilot removable?
3. With the featured marking, is it representative of ETO or PTO?
4. Is it 1/30 or 1/32 scale (previous warbirds were in 1/32)?
5. What type of material is it made of (die cast metal, polystone resin, etc)?

A. Sorry, no it does not.

2. “Is the pilot removable?”
A. Again, no fixed in place.

3. “Markings ETO or PTO?”
A. Definitely European Theatre of Operations.

4. “Is it 1:30 or 1:32?”
A. 1:30 as are all polystone warbirds.

5. “What type of material used?”
A. Polystone with polyresin and metal parts.

I'm glad the P51 has a fixed canopy. Never liked the sliding canopy on
the Hurricane; too thick and overscaled and looked toyish. Besides, there is no need
for a sliding canopy if the pilot is fixed. BTW; read on another forum that the trailing edge
of the wings are too thick and the plane sits too high on its U/C. What do guys you think?

I think a sliding canopy is to be expected for a warbird of this scale and it can be well done; just look at the many diecast versions. As to the other questions, you would need to measure those points and apply the scale to be sure.;)
 
Trivia - the original "greenhouse" canopy on the P51B does NOT slide open! It hinges open in panels. The left side folds down and the top panel raises to the right. The later British-designed Malcom Hood did slide as soes the bubble canopy on the Mustangs after the P51D. So, Andy is right in having the canopy not slide. It could open, but scale hinges tend to be terribly frail items.

Yes indeed, just look at the fine canopies GMP made for the P40 & P51.
My remarks were made with the not so pretty canopy for the Hurricane in mind.

While it is correct that the original P-51B canopy was hinged, the Malcolm Hood, while designed for the British Mustang III, was fitted to many USAAF Eighth and Ninth Air Force P-51B/C fighters.;) So to be precise, it could be done either way. To be honest, when I think of the Mustang I always think of the Malcolm hood version.:)
 
Here is a shot of the real "DING HAO" with (then) Major Howard posing with one of the ground crew. Note the hinged canopy panels. This is the appearance of his aircraft at the time of the Medal Of Honor action. There is another shot that shows apparently "DING HAO" did get a Malcom Hood later in its life.

Yes there were many that did. Here is a nice shot at the current flying P-51B "Old Crow" that has been restored by Bud Anderson's friend Jack Roush, exactly as Bud flew it during the war.

Nice photo! I admit that I'm a tank guy, but the P51s have always fascinated me. They are pure beauty. I get a thrill every time I heard that engine start up! As I understand it, there are only two flying P51B/C types currently.

I think the Malcom Hood was a nice looking modification to the B/C airframe. One pilot wrote that with the Malcom Hood fitted it was the only fighter he ever had where he could lean out and see down and below his own tail (the bubble on the D type didn't bulge out to the side the way the Malcom did).

If we keep on this thread I may just end up trying to buy one of these darned wingy thingys!

Well I have to admit I am a fighter guy, especially the WWII ones. Of course my favorite is the (any) Spitfire but I do love the Malcolm Hood Mustangs. To most pilots, the malcolm B/C version was the best fighter of the line and from what I could tell from a fairly extensive flight simulation modeling of the variants, they are quite correct. The only downside was its more limited 4 guns. It was however decidedly more nimble and forgiving than its better known D successor. I also humbly suggest it was the most beautiful. Better get your wallet out mate.:D

KV, why aren't you out on the town this morning?:D:D
 
This USAAF series is growing on me. My original thoughts were only RAF, but man, some of those new releases are fantastic. I especially like AF 010 ( MP ) AF 008 ( New Boy ) and AF 001 ( Fighter Pilot ), three superb and unique poses and really set the feel of the era. I'll pass on the Mustang, not because its not awesome but because I don't have the display space! :( Looks like I'm going to dabble into yet another series. :eek:

Im beginning to swing towards getting one of these beauties the more you look at her the more you want to own one!!! & Andy confirming that its ETO markings has definitely given me a push in the right direction.

Well, the Sherman tank guy has done it now! I contacted Mandi at Treefrog and she has reserved me a P51B. What is the world coming to? If K&C didn't have such nice dealers the products would be a lot easier to resist.
