Coast watching in the Pacific during WW2 was invaluable and saved lives and one of those occupations that is barely mentioned these days.
Most of the NZ coast watchers were actually employees of NZ Post (Post Office) which makes them a little unique as they were mainly civilian volunteers stationed in remote Islands in the South Pacific.
For the Japanese to capture at least 17x of them and then behead them and to date refuse to acknowledge this atrocity and also not disclose where they buried them is outrageous.
Most war crimes committed by the Japanese largely went unpunished after the war, which many veterans I know (past and present) really struggled with.
As we all know nothing about driving the Japanese out of the Pacific or South-East Asia was easy!
