Paint used for Painting Trophy Figures (1 Viewer)

I have a couple of figures that are chipped. What brand of paint was used for Trophy figures?

Brian,
Pick yourself up some Humbrol glossy paints. I understand that is what Len/Trophy used.

Brian: You might want to contact Len because he also mixed colors and some other techniques to get the right shade.
 
I agree with JW, they're probably done in Humbrol enamels. Many manufacturers are reputed to use them. I used them for many years myself repairing various makes.

What I do is use a little straight from the can and see how it dries - usually darker than when it's wet. If you need to darken, add a touch of black; to lighten, add white. You can get pretty close this way. Good luck!!
 
Does paint have a shelf life ie an expiry date ?

I have several bottles of Testors gloss enamel paint which are about 5 years old or more.

Are these safe to use on my Trophy figures ?

If they have been sealed air-tight they should be fine, unless you stored them in a hostile environment. Open then up and give them a try - its the only way to find out for sure. I've repaired with Testors and they work great. Only issue might be that the colors will not be as close. If you have an old figure or other test subject try them out on the test piece first. And shake or stir bloody hell out of them to be sure the paint is mixed thoroughly.
 
Thank you for the information. I rec'd a figure and the person did not know how to pack it and the spear was bent back and fell off. I managed to glue it back on, but I need to repaint the shaft.

I shall be using the paint for touch up work only.

Dear Raymond:
In the December 2007 issue of Toy Soldier & Model Figure (TS&MF) magazine there is a six page articel entitled "Trophy Tribute" by Jim Hillestad. There is a Q&A section in this splendid article that asked Len Tayor what kind of paint he used. For most of the years Trophy was in business they used "Humbrol Enamels". Len also noted they sometimes left paint cans open for a period of time to get thicker paint when this was needed at times. Hope this information helps. Having TS&MF magazines from the past can be useful. I have every issue of TS&MF since issue 1 back in August 1995.

Hi Raymond

A couple of weeks ago, before Len went in hospital, he told me Trophy also used Vallejo Paints, once dry a coating of gloss varnish was applied

Hi Martyn,

I feel more comfortable with enamel paint, so I shall stay with either Testors or Humbrol.

As I have no experience with acrylics, I better not use this on my Trophy figures.

Thanks very much for the paint information anyhow.

How is Len doing ? I think he had surgery on the 24th March.

Please send him my best for a speedy recovery if you visit him.

Good morning or should say aternoon in jolly old England. Has anyone heard from Len and how's he doing and once again our Master Trophy Hunter struck gold again.....The Lt.
 
I just dropped of my Trophy Holmes Watson Hansom cab with my friend Mike De Marco who owns Le Mans and sculpts and paints these figures. He told me that Humbrol glossy as well as Testors should work. He also mentioned that Imre Risley is having a sale on Humbrol glossy paints as these are hard to find.

As has been mentioned here and elsewhere, he said it's very important to mix and match paints to find the right shading because that is what the manufacturers did.
