After collecting figures for years, I was inspired to try my hand at painting my own after joining this forum and have painted a few kits when I've had time over the past 2-3 years. Here are the last three kits I've painted over the past few months (the Boer War Gordon and Crimean 17th Lancer are for my own collection, the Union drummer is a gift).

Thanks,
Allen

Allen,

thats some nice work you have done with those kits.

I've painted lots of castings, but find that Tradition of London make some of the best, both toy and model figures.

Just one thing I can see is that you hvaen't get the sporran right on the Gordon.

That regiment wore a white sporran with 2 x tails, not 5 tassels.

This is a good reference page for all of the Scottish Regiments, deatiling the kilts, tartans, hose and sporrans used and their individual differences.

I posted it for collectors and painters as a guide becasue when i started painting taratans I wanted to get them right, and so found and modified the painting instructions.

For more Scots have a look here on my site:

Keep up the good work,

John

John,

Thanks for the kind words- especially since i've admired your work and it helped me take the plunge to begin painting in the first place.

I also appreciate the note on the sporran- i agree the Tradition castings are great and I may have trusted them too much on this go around (with the tassels rather than tails molded). I'll keep a closer eye in the future.

Thanks,
Allen

Hi, Allen, nicely done! I'll second John's endorsement of Tradition castings, Tradition is one of my favorite makers, too. The quality of the sculpting is good, the kits assemble easily, and the price is reasonable. You've got a nice finish on these. What say you all, painters? Shall we welcome Allen into our noble ranks? Aye, says I!

Prost!

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread. I have acquired some 90mm Traditions, and want to restore them. The only picture I can find for JW90 083 Jerome Bonaparte, is the stock photo. My problem is I need a better pic of his sword. I have posted one of the sort of angle I would like.

Thanking you in anticipation.

This maybe of help ....

Yes indeed - nicely done - and welcome from another amateur paint splasher - who started due to John's (Obee) inspirational work.

We gallant band of brothers soldier on with our painting - and often share here - with what we produce. Welcome brother. johnnybach

Thank you very much Mr Obee, that is the style of sword I was thinking of. I intend making it out of a hair grip (flat metal, plus a wire hand guard) I just didn't want to make one that looked out of place, it seems to be slung from a belt under the tunic. I also want to get rid of the awful silver on the base, black & gold perhaps.

Brad and johnnybach- thank you gentlemen- two other masters whose work I've admired.

Rediarmor- looking forward to seeing your restoration.

Thanks,
Allen
