The September batch of releases from Osprey includes a fine new volume from Steven Zaloga (admitted one of my favorite armor authors) on the Panther tank versus the late M4A3 Sherman with 76mm gun.

here is the Amazon link;

A fine little book, well written, nicely illustrated. This volume goes a long way to explaining why the Germans win the tank statistics but the US won the armored war. The last chapters look at the tactical employment of the Sherman and the Panther and offers comment about why the Panther didn't fulfill its potential against US armored units, except in a few instances when the Panther was in the hands of expert crews. WW2 didn't offer much true statistical analysis in armor, but Zaloga found data on tank engagements that supports the battle axiom of "see first, shoot first".

Highly recommended to those interested in armor in the liberation of Europe.

"In this book Steven J Zaloga offers a fascinating comparison of the combat performance of the two most important tanks involved in the crucial fighting of 1944, the Sherman and the Panther. Examining the design and development of both tanks, Zaloga notes the obvious superiority that the Panther had over the Sherman and how the highly engineered German tank was eventually beaten back, not necessarily by the improvements made to the Sherman, but rather by the superior numbers of tanks that the Allies were able to put into the field."
