PARA's In Washington, DC ! (2 Viewers)

OK - Some new sets came in that I was hoping for and the Diorama has really taken shape. :)

I have added the "Medium Smoke" from Build-a-Rama - looks good and have added some new PARAs from DD 36 & DD 37 :D

Still have a few Paratroopers in attacking position which doesn't go well with this scene - anybody interested in some singles from DD 36 & DD 37 ??

Anyway - still have the Germans from RA 12 coming to round out the diorama - then it should be complete

Here are some updated pictures:

Hello all,

Thought I’d bump this thread a little bit as it seemed quite relevant.

My collection has finally grown sufficiently large to necessitate investing in some sort of display cabinet. To that end, I’m off on an adventure to Belfast this weekend to visit my nearest IKEA branch (Dublin isn’t pencilled in to have one opened until July or so:rolleyes:).

Based largely on the very favourable feedback I've come across here on the forum, I've decided to go for the Detolf model. It seems to be the most price-friendly, as well as being relatively compact where space may be an issue (as it definitely is for me).

My only slight flicker of unease comes when I consider the question of how heavily to "load" each shelf. IKEA's website has 6kg as being the weight limit for each shelf on this model, but I'm not 100% sure what that practically translates to in terms of numbers of figures/vehicles. Essentially, I'm having horrible visions of returning home sone day to find the guts of my collection lying in a heap of broken glass!

With that in mind, any advice from forum members who use this particular cabinet would be much appreciated. Ron, your Paras diorama seems to feature approximately the number of troops and vehicles I'd like to accomodate on each shelf - reassure me and tell me that there's been no breakage to date?!

Many thanks in advance,

Molloy.

I have often wondered about the glass shelves in my cases. Seems to be a good question as most of my shelves have no listed weight capacity. I know I would hate to came home from work and sit down in the office only to find :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: broken glass & toy soldiers everywhere.

One of Andy's closest friends, a retired solicitor who is now an artist, had a horrible experience with glass shelves - several shelves of literally dozens of early K&C glossy camels and glossy cavalry were destroyed when the top shelf collapsed, causing the lower shelves to all collapse in a chain reaction.

I have glass shelves in all 10 of my display cabinets, and I have never had a problem. I think most cabinets today come with tempered glass which is much stronger. I wouldn't be too concerned.

I wouldn't be too concerned either. The glass will be toughened, and will actually take a surprising amount of weight. It is a sudden impact on glass which will cause it to break, more than a build up of weight.

I think I would have heart failure if this ever happened.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, that's reassured me a good bit!

I'm off first thing in the morning to pick it up, so will do my level best to try and get some pictures posted once I have it properly assembled and filled up.

All the best,

Molloy.

The display cabinet with the Para's is a IKEA Glass Display Case - I have had no problems with it at all (knock on wood ;)) - It seems to hold up very well.

Thanks to everyones kind remarks on my display - It does look great and yes .... Rob - every now and then - I find myself on the "Dark Side"
