Anyone heard about this movie? I read an article about it in Skirmish magazine today and it is supposed to be released in October this year. The article claimed it was the biggest budget movie in Canadian history or something like that. The stills really looked awesome! They even used an artillery piece that was actually in the battle. It looks like it could be a really good movie but Chuck Norris isn't in it so it probably won't be coming to my neck of the woods:(::rolleyes:.

I had not heard about it but I found this so far on the movie.

So it is about the taking of Passchendaele by the Canadian Corps after three months of fierce fighting in which the Allies sustained almost half a million casualties and the Germans just over a quarter of a million. That is not such a good ratio for sure. According to what I read, through the effort the Allies captured a mere five miles (8 km) of new front at a cost of 140,000 lives; a ratio of roughly 2 inches gained per dead soldier. Looks like the movie could be well done but will have to be bloody. Thanks Saber for heads up.

The movie is now open in Canada and is listed at Fandango as having a November 11 opening in my small city. It is hard to find it mentioned in US release dates, typical Hollywood bias I am afraid. Let's hope it is actually available here.

Great Canadian movie. My wife and I went to see it on Sat.Will worth the cost to get in. I hope you guys get a chance to see it.Thank god this`s not a chick flick.
Cheers

I did a google search and can,t find it available in the U.S.
Will we be able to see it? Or about when it goes to DVD.

Wow! With fifty posts I've become a corporal. As Steve Martin would say, "We're really moving now."

After reading the reviews from the above site, I think I,ll wait untill it comes to dvd.
Just as I suspected, sounds more like a love story.
Also some of the reviewers seem to like it simply because it was a Canadien production.

Mixed reviews never bother me and after reading these I think I have little in common with the ones that really didn't like the movie and more in common with those who did. This is not a perfect indicator but frankly nothing short of seeing it yourself is.;) Overall, they still left me with an expectation that it could be something like the Breaker Morant, Galopolli or the 68 version of the Light Brigade, and that would make it well worth seeing for me. I think this may not be a movie for the wife though; likely too much violence, as somewhat expected of a depiction of any battle scenes from that war.

Hi Spitfrnd,
I agree Breaker Morant, and Galopolli were great movies and I can think of a few other good Australian films: Muriel's Wedding, and Rabbit Proof Fence. On the other hand I can't think of any good English speaking Canadian blockbusters.
And now I fear I am in trouble with fellow Canadians. I think I'll pass on Paschendale because I just don't want to see so much misery and I fear that I will.
It will be good to hear from forum members who do go and see it.

I saw it this afternoon. Overall very good, but it's a different kind of war/love story movie, very different in tone to most I've seen. It's hard to describe. It could be an acquired taste. The combat (when it eventually comes) is as brutal and realistic as Saving Private Ryan. But it's only at the end of the film. Will share further thoughts shortly.

That's because there are none. This is the most expensive Canadian movie ever made, yet only had a budget of $20 million (but it's amazing what they managed to do with that small budget). That's probably why reviews on that site were happy just because it was Canadian. We don't ever get to see movies about our country's history so it is something to get excited about. Though I'm not sure if I am more lenient on it because of that fact. I think I actually went in more critical of it because I want it to do our history justice. I had high expectations and they have been partly, but not fully, met. The movie is actually more of a personal story and aside from the scenery, could have happened in any country involved in the war at that time.

This is a new Canadian movie that is supposed to be very good but a little light in action content.I also saw a trailer of a movie called Arn.It is about the 3rd Crusade. It looks to be put together very well but the drawback is that's it's a Swedish movie and I doubt that it will have wide distrubition.

Finally caught this on Encore cable TV today. Liked the beginning as it pulls the viewer in and commits the viewer to watching. The story was ok but rather average overall. The real meat of the movie is the last 45 minutes or so. Good action with brutal hand-to-hand combat and an excellent version of what the battlefield was like. Glad I saw it but don't know if I'd watch it again. -- Al
