Fellow enthusiasts, here is a link to the website covering the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor at Ft. Knox, KY. Every year they hold a couple mock battles and demonstrations, usually Memorial Day and 4th of July. The updated website has a couple video downloads of tanks in motion, very fun to watch.

The link;

This is a museum that really works hard both in preservation and in demonstration.

Hi Gary,

Are you by chance a Tanker or Cavalrymen? I am wondering since I dont see too many folks talking about Ft Knox and the Patton Museum. I was last there in '98 and always love to visit when I am nearby. Of course I have been there a lot over the course of my time in uniform.

I wanted to be a tanker (or at least I thought so), but my asthma kept me out of the military. I'll admit that I wasn't sorry when it kept from a government-paid vacation of southeast Asia. I'm worse than a former tanker - I'm a "wanna be"! I love hearing tanker stories and climbing on the tanks. That's what led me to Ft. Knox, the desire to see the Patton Museum and their Living History displays.

My father was an officer in the Nebr. National Guard, and while he was a "Red Leg" then transferred to Ordnance, I got exposed to military people and equipment from a young age. One of my favorite memories from my junior high age was when he took me along for a ride when the guard moved an M41 light tank between bases (about a 15 mile ride).

So I'm an overgrown kid with a fascination for tanks, artillery and firearms.

There's a lot of it about :) My Grandfather was in the Australian Light Horse in WWI and my Father was a Navigator in Lancaster bombers during WWII. My eldest brother was drafted for Vietnam and trained as a driver on various vehicles but the war finished before he was sent overseas - I don't think he was disappointed btw. Despite all this (or maybe because of it) none of them displayed any interest in military things subsequently.

However, I have always been into military stuff and I even applied to join the army when I was younger. The recruiting guy reckoned I was officer material (clearly he didn't know me). I later received a letter saying my application for the Officer Military Colledge was refused as I was to young. I never did get around to reapplying as I reckoned I would be to inclined to argue if I didn't agree with something - which doesn't go down to well in the army :)

One of my nephew's, the son of my eldest brother, recently completed two years in officer training and uni, and of course my brother and sister in law made it clear to me his 'weird' interest was all my fault because of all the cool models and stuff I have :)

Well I always love to chat with folks about tanks and cav stuff so feel free to drop me a line anytime. I come from a family with a lot of military folks scattered in it. One uncle is a retired infantry Master Sergent and my dad was a Dr in the Army for a few years his dad was also. I have another uncle that was Merchant Marine thoughtout the 30's and 40's had some very interesting stories about places he'd been. Another Uncle was a Commander in the Navy who spent some time in the water when his destroyer was torpedoed he was a very interesting fellow. So I guess its in the blood and its very likely that one of my kids will enter the service too.

Have a good one guys

Dave
