Let me first say , I have not been scamned yet, but it got me thinking.
As some of you know I collect NHL hockey jerseys. Well there is a new forum for this type of collecting and I posted my want list. I got a response and said I would buy it. He then requested that if I pay with paypal I mark it as a gift so there would be no paypal fees. I had never heard of this before and I have made 100,s of paypal transactions. I did find the box to check gift, which I did and paypaled him the money.
After I did this I got to thinking, if he did not ship what I paid for I would be left with no recourse as I said this money was a gift?
Am I correct in this thinking? And from now on, any transactions involving paypal , other than ebay, and especially with people I,ve delt with before, why not "check gift"!

Gary...

I have paid a couple of people on here with paypal gift. I heard it was so they did not get an amount deducted but, I am not sure as I have not asked anyone for this kind of payment. It will be interesting to hear from some of those who know about this.

I would think with the protection you have from these organisations that you would be safe no matter how you tick the box to pay. Though, I stand to be corrected

Gary,

I understand not wanting to get hit with fees but I would be cautious about marking the gift box for the reasons you stated.

It is my understanding that there is no recourse as you marked it as a gift. This option is to be used for the gift of cash. Why would you send a stranger a gift? Please free to send me one though if you choose :D

I think Paypals take on it is why would you send a stranger a gift.......ie to get out of the fees, therefore any loss is basically a "sucks to be you for trying to avoid the fees."

I only use the gift option for payment if it is someone I have built up a sales rapport with.

That's how I understand it as well; having you mark it as a gift allows him to weasel out of paying a fee on the transaction, ie, you're sending him a gift of 100.00, not a gift of 96.00 after factoring in the paypal fees...................

So, next time I sell Ray Lewis one of those antler thingies (since we have so much deer in the back yard I figured they won't miss an antler or two), I'll just tell him to mark the payment as a gift :wink2: I mean, how do you think I can afford this hobby? {eek3} ^&grin

There is a way to get out of fees as some has done it for me when I sold them something but I don't know how they did it.
Mark

I believe that the sender pays the fees and not the payment recipient if you use this option.

Perfectly legit.

Gary-
Not sure if you have ever come across this website, but they sell a lot interesting game-used NHL jerseys and equipment. Some nice items: www.meigray.com

Unfortunately for my wallet I have found that site. A few toy soldier dealers are short a few bucks as I have spent my money on this site.
I really only buy from them when they have their sales, it,s usually buy one get one free, so the prices you see listed are twice what I,ve paid.
Another site is "Iceviolance", again you can work with the owner and get better deals.
I,ve now got almost 70 different jerseys.

Anyone who believes we are in a bad economy should try bidding on some of this stuff. I just got skunked tonight in the AHL auction for the recent Outdoor game. And this was for things like warm up jerseys and pucks. One puck went for $400+!!! I felt like a nut making a $100 bid, but before I could even get it in the price was over $200. The warm up jerseys (not the actual game worn jerseys) went from $500 -$1000. And they were going like hotcakes. Again, for the AHL Hershey Bears not the NHL. As someone who has paid $500 for a single toy soldier even I am shocked at the prices and deep pockets of that market. We are a sports obsessed culture.
