Just recently a forum member bought some items from me with paypal. Prior to the transaction I told him if he paid by paypal I would have to add the paypal fees to his purchase. He replied that he could still pay me without me having the fees. And he did! I never heard of this before. Does anyone know how this works?

Was it an eBay sale? Not sure, but I think if I as the buyer flag the PayPal transaction as goods-other, it circumvents eBay fees. I've never used it as a seller, to receive payments, so I don't know how they collect usage fees on that transaction.

Prost!

there is a way to send personal transfers that circumvents the fees I think.

I know the person sending the money can pay the fees - it doesn't show up in the total amount to the one receiving the money.

Hello Gary,

Yes, it can be done. In your transaction, the buyer paid the PayPal fees.

After logging in to PayPal, click on the "Send Money" tab.

Then, select "Personal Payments" and proceed.

The buyer is given the option to either pay the fee himself or pass it on to the seller.

You can check this out by hovering your mouse pointer over "Learn more" in the box.

I was unaware of this.

With respect to eBay transactions, I believe eBay prohibits in some fashion making the buyer pay for paypal fees.

Brad,

If a buyer pays for an item via the eBay checkout system, I believe this ensures that it is the seller who pays the PayPal fees.

A seller cannot insist that a buyer pay for an eBay item (plus fees) by using the PayPal "Personal Payments" option. The buyer would stand to forfeit Buyer Protection etc.

I have used this option for buying sets from fellow collectors worldwide in a non-Bay setting.

I had no idea that could be done.

If you are listing an item on item and you say that the buyer has to cover the paypal fees ebay can delete your auction and sanction you.

You have to be careful with what "fees" you list. You can list a package handling fee for example or insurance but not really anything beyond that.
