Sorry, everybody. Don't know how I managed it, but I submitted the same thread twice. Dumb, huh? You'll find the other thread under "Perfection Or Not Perfection -- That Is the Question." My apologies.

OMG treadhead, I think the wrong duplicate got deleted as all your comments have gone. But as I had done a response I'll post it here. Not that anybody will know what it's all about

Treadhead my friend, there are more opinions on this forum than there are members, but I suspect there is one thing that most of us would agree upon. Most of us here collect models and soldiers so we can experience the different pieces by eye and touch. Which means displaying them out of their boxes.

It's true that most of us acknowledge the added collectability of mint boxed items, which is why we keep most of our boxes in case we want to sell the item later. And of course there are plenty of guys that buy something to put away to sell later and never bother to display it. But most of our items are removed from their boxes and put on display as is, or in dioramas.

Models and figures made by Britains, King & Country, Honour Bound etc can be removed from their boxes and put on display for short or long periods then returned to their box if/when they need to be sold. The models then look as good as they day they were purchased and are still in mint/boxed condition for all practical purposes.

However FOV vehicles and accessories are tied into their boxes in such a way that they can never be returned to their box in a satisfactory manner. Which is the main reason I threw all of my FOV boxes out.

That said, collecting is all about personal choice. So if you are happy to keep all your models in their boxes and still gain enjoyment from them, more power to you buddy, because it's not something I could do. And no doubt they will hold their value better than any of the FOV stuff I have.

Rather than put all of your eggs into the FOV basket. Why don't you try the 1/30 - 1/32 models made by the other companies and experience what it's like to pick up and play with those beauties.

For starters I'd suggest the Hummel made by King and Country as I doubt FOV will make that one for a while, if ever.

Edit, I wonder if Andy C will choke on his whiskey if he reads this :)

Life is way too short. Keep the boxes if you must but please take then out, enjoy them, play with them, make a diorama-just do not stare at them with a layer of plastic between you & them. If you love them as much as you say-I doubt you will be selling them anytime soon. Unleash the kid inside of you & play!

Yep, Oz. It’s been a comedy of errors: I post the same thread twice (whata dolt!), and then the duplicate thread with all the writing gets zapped. Love it!

Anyway, I’ve got a theory. I keep everything in their boxes because the little kid in me loves the model-shop look. As silly as it sounds, my office resembles the innards of hobby stores I haunted as a kid. I’ve stacked and displayed my FOV boxes (and others) on my walls, and I swear the effect timewarps me to my childhood days.

I’ve gotta agree with you and Beaufighter, though. These beautiful, inspiring models are meant to breath. They ought to be removed from their boxes, displayed, and perhaps even played with. But if I did that, my little ersatz hobby store would vanish. :D

Oh, and that fabulous King & Country Hummel pic – puh-leeese don’t post anymore. I can see myself hunting down every last one of those, too, and I truly would go bankrupt!

I gota solution. Buy more.

If you buy one of each and you choose not to open them. Fine. But, you miss the opportunity to physically handle and spiritually attach to the object. Esoteric eh. But it is true. The human spirit becomes more beautiful as the physical body plays. With some people it's playing an instrument, others it's growing flowers, and on and on. With me, it's toy soldiers.

I also know and accept that by playing (not a destructive playing like blowing up models like I used to as a kid) I may cause some unchangeable change to the toys I play with. I have a tendancy to drop just about everything. I accept that as a price I have to pay to set my spirit free.

Buy one, keep it in the box. Make your hobby store real. Then buy another to play with. You will not regret it.

As The picture shows everything comes out of the box. I have tried to keep items in their boxes but sooner or later out it comes. I have to hold them in my hand and get them in the dirt. If I could afford it there are lots of beautiful examples out there that should be left in their box.
Have fun with your toys you only live once, at least on this earth and they say you cant take your toys with you.:)

Way to go-I love it. Thanks for the childhood flashback my friend.

Happy Playing,
Beaufighter

That is your choice, to open or not to open. Charlie has it right in my opinion. I have not played like that since I was nine or ten. About two years ago I was digging up ground to put in patio stones. About 6 inches under ground I unearth a Marx Japaneese MG guy. It brought back memories of my brother and I playing with our soldiers. I want to get that kid in me back, thats why I got back into collecting these little addictions. Play On Mike.:)

That is why I eventually hope to find appropriate rules and wargame with my soldiers and vehicles. It allows for a controlled battle enviroment.....Michael

Mike and Michael,

A very close collector friend of mine once wisely said to me, "You know, many people collect toy soldiers in order to recapture some of their childhood." Then he turned to me and continued with a broad smile, "But you and I never really grew up." :)

I thought that about summed it up! :D

Warmest personal regards,

Pat ;)
