The passing of Peter Falk seemed to slip under the Radar here last week, so I just wanted to pass on my respects to a fine actor who created my fave US Cop show in the 70's and who gave us as a family a programme we all enjoyed as I grew up, you can keep your Kojacks, Ironsides and Hawaii five o's, Columbo was No1 .

Yeh, great as Columbo, but ah just one more thing, ah... he was also in one of my favourite films "Himmel Uber Berlin" or "Wings of Desire" and of course some classic war films.

Not to mention his role in "The Great Race".

"Push the button, Max!"

He was an original. I think he annoyed his suspects into confessing.^&grin It was a great show, real entertainment. RIP. -- Al

He starred with Alan Arkin in "The In Laws", which for my money is tied with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein as the funniest movie ever made.

Serpentine, Shel, serpentine!^&grin

I liked him in Anzio and Castle Keep; the latter was a very good movie that barely gets mentioned..............

Yep...Max from the Great Race.

I also remember the Columbo episode filmed at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. I still have Citadel flash backs 40 years later.

Was that the episode that starred Patrick McGoohan as the commandant? If it was, that was a good episode. One of the few I actually remember. -- Al

Yep..that's the one. The SOB commandant was trying to frame a cadet for killing a board member who wanted women to admitted to the fictional school.

There were many really good episodes featuring well known guest stars as both murderers and victims. Robert Culp's episodes were especially good as he played the bad guy role very well, so well in fact he starred three times I believe. If I'm correct one of Steven Spielberg's first directing jobs was a Columbo episode. Leslie Nielson was another guest who joined the likes of Johnny cash, Jack Cassidy, Roddy Mcdowall, Donald Pleasence , Ray Miland, Anne Baxter, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Vaughn And William Shatner amongst many others as murderers who underestimated the scruffy detective at their peril.

FoxTel in Australia has a Colombo marathon showing tonight.

In the Colombo TV episode Grand Deceptions there are many scenes showing a very large diorama of the Battle fo Getysburg. A missing union soldier found behind some books helps Colombo solve the murder.

I read somewhere that Petr Falk would do little unscripted things during filming that would annoy other actors and help increase the feeling of irritation with the character.
