View attachment 113787 I have read with interest the attempts to de-code a WW11 message found on a dead Carrier Pigeon....Attch is the message and what is the message de-coded....a basic Group Letter code..example EAJT..translated..Eat At Joe's Tomorrow....Look at the big Red letters on the attch chart to see what I mean....everything is so easy.....My problem is this......there are 26 letters in the Alphabet....usually all used....the one's not used put there to annoy you.....The pigeon code which I will refer to as the "Arty Map" has 20 letters....there are 24 squares with 4 squares blanked out with multi numbers.....B>>>K>>>M>>>V.....The letters X and Y are omitted........Look at the big Red Letter chart and you will find LKXGH and MIAPX.....The X is not included on Arty Map and the K is a blank square (can still be used as K but I think the numbers have a meaning for grid reference's...it is an Arty Map...therefore it stands to reason you would have targets).....P for Panzer...M for mortars....Q for HQ....HQ was refereed to as H in one letter group.....J for Jerry.....AOAKN...Artillery Observer at K section Normandy.....To you and me these letters mean nothing...But..the Germans would have sorted it out in nothing flat.....PABLIZ...Panzer attack-Bliz....and so on....My point is.....there were only 20 letters on the Arty Map...4 blank numbered squares...X and Y omitted... the missing letters ....B...K....M....V....X....Y were all used in the RED Letters to de-code.......Y..is not used at all.........to me... something is wrong ...there are NO figures...no map references.....THERE are references to figures on the Arty Map...36000x22000...the squares are numbered...similar to a map......the four multi numbered squares.....they must be there for a purpose .....a simple 26 ...Alphabet squares would have done the job much easier......The message is headed "Artillery Map"....to me that means...figures...targets...map references......I think the message is different than what has been suggested......I know very little about codes...but...it seems to me they added letters that were not on the original message....X...being one....anyone with more knowledge care to have a crack a itt...interesting if nothing else...and I am very happy to be proved wrong on any point I made....as I said...I aint no expert...TomB
