Plume repair (1 Viewer)

We want to drill the plume. First we file the bottom end of the plume to make it clean and smooth. Center your bit and twist the pin vise. Firm and steady wins the day.

Then clean the area to attach the plume to. Using the same bit as before center the bit where the plume was. Drill the helmet or hat in the spot where the plume was.

Thanks for the SBS, KV! We know that this kind of question comes up pretty frequently, and your demo is very clear and I think it will help a lot of folks out there.

Prost!

Thanks Brad, I will do better next time. I will make the process more clear. I was able to edit some of the posts!

Beatiful workmanship there...

Your 'surgery' looks so hygenic when compared with my 'bush medicine'.

No white cloths, just a soiled painting rag and a rusty scalpel at my place.

Still it achives the same result in the end.

Thanks for providing us all with the step by step imagery, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Well Done,

John

Hi Vamp,

I really hate disclosing this depth of ignorance on my part, but if I do not ask my questions, I will never know the answers. You have lost me somewhat in frame three. My questions are:

What is CA?

You indicate the wire fits tightly. I see no wire although I presume it now resides partially inside the plume and partially inside the hat/helmet. What type wire to you use? How deep should your drill holes be? How difficult is it to match the drill hole in the plume to the drill hole in the hat/helmet? And, exactly for what might you need pliers? To twist the wire into place?

As you can see, I have not yet achieved Master Modeler status. :D

Thanks for your patience with my questions.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi colleagues
I use the same technique.
We drill a hole 1 mm in diameter
to a depth of 3 -5 mm
Also use CA, but sometimes we fix the parts by soldering
For this case, better to use copper wire

(CA is super glue)

Wade,

The wire is brass rod that is very small .021 I think. It is very fine and will fit in the plume. The drill bit matches the wire. The needle nose pliers are for holding the wire when inserting it into the plume. The depth should vary but a minimum of 3/16ths of an inch. As far as lining up the holes it is not too difficult. That is why I file the edge of the plume. Makes it easier to find the center.

Hope that helps.

KV

Hi Vamp,

Thanks a million! Yes, that helps greatly. You have answered all my questions and now I am "not quite" as ignorant as I was before I listed my questions. :D

You do great work, Michael.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

If I may offer an assist...

Pat, "CA" is cyanoacrylate glue, or Krazy Glue (one formula). I will also use 2-part epoxy glues, too, depending on the repair.

Sorry to hijack, KV!

Prost!

Can not hijack what is freely given. This is a forum. Ideas routinely and frequently exchanged:D:D:D:D

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the assist. Your patient kindness with my ignorance is greatly appreciated!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Well put, KV, you're very right, and very gracious ;)

And Pat, no patience needed, glad to see others interested in the painting/modeling side of the hobby.

KV, the picture of your pin vise and drill bit made me think about my own tools. What size drill did you use for this particular piece, and do you have a full set of bits, or a couple of bits? I currently have 4 sizes that I've been using for every piece, but I'm considering getting a more extensive set. I'm starting to find, especially on the scale modeling side, that I could use a finer range of diameters. For example, the fourth size that I have, I bought to drill out the portholes on a 1/700 model that I'm building of the USS Pennsylvania. The smallest bit I had was too big. I'm curious to know what you use, and what anyone else might use, too.

Prost!

Sorry Brad. Went to find the receipt no sizes on it. They are very fine as one can imagine. The pin vise I used for the plume was actually eyeglass screwdriver size. I think it was something like.027? Best to go to a hobby shop that sells this equipment. (train shops) Take your plume with you for reference.
