Here is my typical photo setup in my basement. For light I switch between a normal 60W incandescent and a GE 60W Reveal bulb depending on subject and colors. This is setup on a table with bottles and jars of landscaping supplies and a box of trees, rocks, etc. I set up my camera on a tripod in front of it and shoot away from a variety of angles and heights. It is quite simple and works perfectly for these small scale dioramas.

Thanks Randy for the "how to" lesson. I learned something new. You mean I don't have to bring all the trees I cut down into my basement to take a picture?:D John

John:

If your basement is not heated like mine they might come in handy:D

I was wondering if you use a digital camera? I have tried some pictures of my K&C collection and the light can be tricky. If I am too close the item appears fuzzy.
Thanks

Yes I use a new Sony Cybershot digital camera that can take HD 1080p widescreen photos. I still, however, need to run my photos through Photoshop Elements to correct color, lighting, etc. Your fuzziness is possibly due to the camera being too close to your subject. Your manual should say how close you can get.

Digital cameras have a slight delay and are more sensitive to movement so tripods are usually mandatory.

Here is my new setup for shooting Mini-dios. For Christmas I got the Quantaray E-Box Portable Photostudio shown below. I am supplementing the 2 halogen sidelights with an incandescent bulb on the top. The system allows a diffused light through the cloth sides. I am still experimenting with it but have had good results. My posts the last few days have used this setup. The Halogen lights give a blue tint, the incandescent a more warm yellow. I find that blending the 2 works best so far. Konrad (kogu) is also experimenting with this system and we'll keep you posted on our results.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for posting information regarding your experience with the E-Box Portable Studio. I am considering purchasing this product and I am very interested in your opinion of it. I am especially grateful that you mentioned adding the incandescent light. Sharing details of this nature are helpful to all of us who photograph our collections!

I look forward to hearing more about your experience with the setup!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)
