Poll for OzDigger on how do you display your collection.

Hey Pete or Shannon can you delete my attempts at polls.

I can do the poll but you need to tell me what the choices are you want a poll on. It can be up to 10.

Brad, I was thinking of the following five choices, but you can include whatever else you can think of.

Shelf - most pieces are just placed on the shelf with nil or very few extras.

Diorama - most pieces are displayed in individual dioramas.

Table top - mainly use large table top sized dioramas, can include war gaming.

Combination - fairly even split of two or more of the above methods.

Other - whatever other way you may display your pieces (also please specify in a separate post).

Oz,

I think your proposed poll will be very interesting and I have a small suggestion for the wording used in your poll. Let me explain. I display my collection in a variety of ways: in large curio cabinets, wall mounted curios, shelves, the top of my roll top desk, and in stackable, see-through cases much like jewelers use. But,...primarily, I display my soldiers in curio cabinets.

My concern is with the second item on your poll: "Shelf - Most pieces are just placed on the shelf with nil or very few extras." I do not consider my pieces just placed on the shelf because each shelf has some sort of theme. I have the Alamo on one, Ancient Egyptians on another, a Confederate Artillery line on another, the Mexican-American War on one, Samurai consititutes another shelf, etc., etc. Could you drop the word "just" from your poll and, thereby reduce some confusion for types like me who ponder every word listed in a poll item?

Also, I am not certain what you really mean by "...with nil or very few extras." I assume you mean so few extras as not to constitute a diorama. But, is this additional wording necessary? For example, I have one shelf of one curio devoted to Rorke's Drift. The shelf contains a limited edition diorama manufactured by W. Britains. In short, the diorama is not one I constructed, it is part of an existing set. Further, I have other sets, mainly American Civil War, that have terrain bases. I assume that the bases do not consititute dioramas, but they certainly add to the display and they could be considered "vignettes." Could your purposes also be served by dropping the "...with nil or very few extras" from your wording?

Since I mentioned vignettes, you might include the word "vignette" as part of the diorama item, unless you feel vignettes should be a separate catagory or unless you feel the use of the word adds unnecessary confusion for the poll participant.

No matter what you finally settle upon for wording, I will participate in the poll. I am really interested to discover how others display their items and I appreciate your proposal of a poll. I look forward to the results!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat, it looks like Brad has set it up, so we'll have to go with that I guess. Collectors usually end up with a variety of display types and I wanted the poll to reflect the major portion of their collection. For example I also have a few several vignettes and dioramas made up, including those on shelves, but the majority of my pieces just sit on the shelves in no particular fashion.

Oz,

Brad seems to have taken care of my concerns regarding the poll. I don't know if he read my post and decided to incorporate my suggestions or if he simply felt similar changes in the "shelf" item would improve the poll and, consequently, acted independently. At any rate, my concerns have faded dramatically since he posted the final survey form. And,...I have already completed the poll. I really look forward to seeing the final poll data.

Warm regards,

Pat

Pat,

I did read your note and tried to keep the suggestions as neutral as possible. It was the first time I remember you being slightly irritated

Brad,

You caught me! Yes, I was slightly irritated, but I wanted to use my irritation in a constructive fashion to suggest improvements in the poll. If the poll items are confusing, then the poll results are meaningless and,...I am very interested in the results of this particular poll. Further,...I do not just place my soldiers on the shelf! Sorry,...there I go again.

For whatever it is worth, I am human and I do occasionally get irritated. Usually, when I am irritated, I do not post to the forum. I usually wait at least a day and, by then, my irritation fades or someone else responds to what concerned me and does so in a more skilled manner than I might. There have been several occasions in which, by waiting to respond, I discovered that I had misinterpreted what someone said. The waiting saved me from posting a rather stupid, unnecessary response and I was very glad for that.

At any rate, you caught me fair and square! I shall endeavor to do better in the future! ;)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Why would a simple pole be the cause for anyones irritation?

Its simply a collection of peoples opinions.

John, we nearly had a Florida on our hands! Butterfly this and hanging chad that. Even the most simple thing can trigger weeping and gnashing of teeth. Good to see that we now have a poll underway on the other thread: I'm a bit of everything, from shelves to dioramas.
