Oz,
I think your proposed poll will be very interesting and I have a small suggestion for the wording used in your poll. Let me explain. I display my collection in a variety of ways: in large curio cabinets, wall mounted curios, shelves, the top of my roll top desk, and in stackable, see-through cases much like jewelers use. But,...primarily, I display my soldiers in curio cabinets.
My concern is with the second item on your poll: "Shelf - Most pieces are just placed on the shelf with nil or very few extras." I do not consider my pieces just placed on the shelf because each shelf has some sort of theme. I have the Alamo on one, Ancient Egyptians on another, a Confederate Artillery line on another, the Mexican-American War on one, Samurai consititutes another shelf, etc., etc. Could you drop the word "just" from your poll and, thereby reduce some confusion for types like me who ponder every word listed in a poll item?
Also, I am not certain what you really mean by "...with nil or very few extras." I assume you mean so few extras as not to constitute a diorama. But, is this additional wording necessary? For example, I have one shelf of one curio devoted to Rorke's Drift. The shelf contains a limited edition diorama manufactured by W. Britains. In short, the diorama is not one I constructed, it is part of an existing set. Further, I have other sets, mainly American Civil War, that have terrain bases. I assume that the bases do not consititute dioramas, but they certainly add to the display and they could be considered "vignettes." Could your purposes also be served by dropping the "...with nil or very few extras" from your wording?
Since I mentioned vignettes, you might include the word "vignette" as part of the diorama item, unless you feel vignettes should be a separate catagory or unless you feel the use of the word adds unnecessary confusion for the poll participant.
No matter what you finally settle upon for wording, I will participate in the poll. I am really interested to discover how others display their items and I appreciate your proposal of a poll. I look forward to the results!
Warmest personal regards,
Pat
