Primer for Plastic TSSD Soldiers!? (1 Viewer)

Thanks John, on the news that the hobby shop is still there. At coffee today my buddy thought they closed up because the owners were elderly. I will tell him they are still open. Maybe we will go visit the shop in the spring. John

Frustrated....!!

So far the gray primer is still "tacky" or "sticky" but hasn't done anything else yet. I received the acrylic paint in the mail that I wanted to paint with so I got started a couple of days ago. I have painted a good portion of the TSSD Soldier with the paint (probably about 3/4's of him) and the paint seems to be doing fine. I actually let it dry over night and then added a second coat today just to make sure it looked good.

However, while painting the figure, I was holding him with two fingers. I had my thumb under his foot-stand, and my index finger on top of his helmet (and was painting him with the other hand). I finally noticed a discolored spot on top of his helmet when I sat him down, and I actually thought it was a spot of paint that must have gotten on my finger and was now on his helmet. Upon further examination I noticed that it was something worse! The spot was actually caused by the primer being peeled off. It had apparently stuck itself to my index finger and when I sat the figure down, it peeled off on my finger tip.

As I continued to paint the figure I looked for peeling-primer, but didnt think I found any (at first). Then I noticed that he had primer peeling off of him in several places, but they were very small hole of scratches in the primer....and nothing more.

So, from what I can tell, at this point the primer is going to peel off and I am assuming it will take the paint with it. However, I have no idea how long it will take for the primer to peel!?

I guess my options are:(1) Somehow start over, by removing all his paint and primer first. (2) I can stop painting him, set him aside for a few days, and just see what happens to him. (or) (3) I could continue painting him and just hope for the best!!

I guess I will just press forward (option 3) and hope for the best (and not use option 1 or 2). After all, I really dont want to start over if I can avoid it, but I also dont want a bad looking figure due to peeling paint.

I know a lot of people recommend Testators Dulcote Flat Spray for Finish! Does anyone know if using a finish would help prevent any future cracking or peeling.

Sorry for the long message, but thanks for the help!

Hi, Aggie, no, no sealer will prevent paint from lifting, if that paint has not bitten into the surface.

Strip the figure, wash it with warm water with a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid in it, let it dry, and prime it again. For the primer that you're using, check the label and make sure of any special instructions, such as curing time. I can tell you that the primers that I've used, automotive primers, and Rust-o-leum's primer, all cure fully overnight, and often in a matter of hours. But I make sure that the primer has cured, before applying the next layers of paint.

There are other factors that can affect paint curing time, such as temperature and humidity. Room temperature is good, as is relatively lower humidity as well.

I also recommend using a painting stand or holder of some kind, so you don't have to touch the figure. It can be as simple as using a piece of tape doubled back on itself, and sticking the figure to a piece of wood to use as a handle, to making something fancier that works like a vise to hold the figure.

Hope that helps, prosit!
Brad

I'd like to add that I just wash the TSSD figures and prime with white acrylic. Let dry and use a couple of coats of the basic uniform colors. Then the details.

Thanks for all the advice.

I think at this point I am just going to finish the paint job and learn from my mistakes. I will use this figure as a learning tool, and practice some techniques, etc. Hopefully, he wont peel...but if he does, then I will strip him and start over at that time.

That may not seem as efficient, but it allows me some practice. So, that is fine.

We shall see how it goes...
