Princess Diana Chess Pieces (1 Viewer)

Here are two pieces that are extremely rare and are probably only the third examples in existence.

Back in 1981 a special commission was under taken by Trophy to produce a Chess set to commemorate the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana

I understand that only two complete sets where ever produced, one is in private hands and the other is in The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California

As you can see one piece represents a London “Bobby” and the other St. Paul's Cathedral

Both pieces are from the last London Show, I do not have the complete set

I think the only other pieces were the Paint Masters, therefore I believe that these are two of the Paint Masters.

The St Paul's Cathedral piece is sold metal and weighs a pound or two{eek3}

Would be interesting to see what other pieces were in the set.

Alternatively - does Len have a picture perhaps?

Great idea about the picture, I will have a word with Mr. T this week. In the meantime anyone visiting the RR Library and can get a picture, assuming it is on public display, would be great

I have always found that Curators of museums are quite helpful people generally, and am pretty sure that if someone were to ask for sight of something that they hold (even if NOT on public display) - they might help out. Especially, as in these pieces - they are so rare, and two of the Masters have emerged.

So - anyone in California near the museum - with a camera????

THEN - once you have the pic - it's just a matter of tracking down the other 30 "Old Masters"- eh????jb Lucky old you!

Might only have to track down another 14 pieces if one Master was used for each set of 8 pawns jb , the job is getting easier already^&grin

Len told me that one of the sets "allegedly " was presented to president RR. There are a strict limitations about what president kept to himself and what was sent to the gift's department of his Library. I contacted the RR library in a while ago unfortunately they did not have any information about this set.

The guy who wanted to make these sets for mass production was a local wood maker, so he made a chessboard and even printed some color flyers showing the set. However this project never took off.

RR collected some toy soldiers over his life but mostly Civil War. One of PA TS dealers told me that he used to mail some Civil War sets to the RR attorney at the address in Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC.
