Same as my birthday, I hope I don't have a dog of a year :)

Dear Steven,

Many of my family live in Hong Kong (my sister), Taiwan (my brother in law) or China (my two brothers in law, one in Shanghai and another near Beijing), so Gong Xi Fa Cai!

All the best to you and your family.

Steven, what is the significance of the Dog? Michael
Dear Michael,
The Chinese calendar is composed of 12 year cycles, with each year named after one of 12 animals. The characteristics of each animal are said to determine the way that people born in that year will act. People born during the Year of the Dog (1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, and 1994) are described as loyal, trustworthy, likable and sympathetic.:)

That sure does describe every Dog I have ever known, thank you Steven. :) Michael

My son was born two months ago. Please let me know what last year's animal and characteristics were, so I can know what to expect from the little terror!

Dear Louis,
Alec was born during the Year of the Rooster. Characteristics are determined, proud, and confident. Roosters are said to have many talents and think deep thoughts.:)

Steven,

My wife started to tell me the story about the 12 animals but then got a phone call. Do you think you could put it down here when you have a chance?

Dear Steven,

Thank you so much for the information. I hope my son grows up to be a traditional child of the year of the Rooster and thinks deep thoughts!

Based on information from place mats in Chinese restaurants I've always thought I was a Pig, but with more on-line info I've discovered I'm actually a Dog, an Earth-Dog to be precise.

Now everything makes sense, my wife has always said I'm like a dog with a bone once I start on something :) Here's a link: http://www.tuvy.com/entertainment/chinese_horoscope.htm

The short version is that long ago, Buddha called all the animals on earth to a meeting. Only 12 animals came: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, lamb, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. As a reward, Buddha gave each animal a year in the cycle and declared that anyone born in that year would resemble the animal in some way.:)

One version I read was that they had a race across a river to Budha and the order they finished became their order in the calendar. Apparently the Rat and the Cat were buddies and hitched a ride on the Ox but the Rat pushed the Cat off the Ox into the river and the Cat missed out on a 'sign' - they were not good friends from then on apparently :)

This only proves out my theory that the world is run by those that show up for the meeting. :D
