Damian: The LVT-1 and 2 were NOT equipped with a ramp, thus the men would have to go "over the sides". By Iwo Jima, much better equipped and armored LVT's would be in service and the earlier models would have been relegated to strictly rear-echelon supply details. I have never seen an LVT-1, that late, but I have seen pictures of 2's on the different islands--not in assault waves.
By Tarawa, all front-line Marine outfits were issued the cammo gear, and the plain helmets were not suppossed to be worn, although there are lots of pictures of Marines with plain helmets, because the covers would tear from shells, coral, etc. The cammo utilities would change and evolve, but the basic pattern and colors were the same thru the rest of the war and even on into Korea. There were shortages and the common green utilitees could and would be worn till the end of hostilitees. The early cammo uniforms were, hot for so close to the equator. Different materials were tried on later issues, to try and remedy that situation. All of them were reversable--brown side and jungle green side--so were the helmet covers. Sometimes Marines would let out the backside of the helmet cover-to cover thier neck from the sun.
From what I have seen of the figures, they look like they would fit any island campaign except Guadalcanal. Those first Marine division men went in with the standard issue non cammo gear and bolt action springfield rifles--a point that I checked out on the new series and Spielberg got it right!!!!
