Following Islandawana and Rorkes Drift I think its probably a lesson for John Bull;)

That's what I thought. Punch was usually "rah rah" for patriotism but tough on the politicians.

Very interesting Scott,I love these old cartoons from Punch, very enjoyable. They must have had a field day after the humiliating defeat at Islandawana.

As Richard Stevens of the Natal Mounted Police said of Isandlwana, "There will be an awful row at home about this." So true. -- lancer

"Punch began publication in 1841. In its early years, it was subtitled "The London Charivari", after a Parisian magazine that it was originally patterned on. It ceased publication in 1992. In 1996, the magazine was revived under new ownership, but the revival folded in 2002."

Some years are missing but most of the interesting years are there for the Crimean War and WW I as well. Reading on-line takes a little practice to get the size right to make "turning the pages" easy.
