Hi, I`ve recently bought 6 very nice Zulu war period British lnfantry. every thing appears to be historically correct- colours, equipment, etc-except that they are all wearing puttees. In my uniform reference books, I can find no such thing for that period. I know that when the British army changed to khaki , puttees were common place-but were they worn with the red / blue uniforms ? can anyone help please. billy

No putteees. Black leather gaiters were worn, the AZW uniform is basicaly "home service" dress with a "foreign service" helmet. Puttees originated in India as the name sugests. They gradually became more popular and were very common by the time of the Sudan campaigns.

I've got an idea that they were worn by the time of the first boer war in 1880-81 but I can't locate my reference right now.
