questions--2 German tanks (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

I can answer the second part of the question with a single word. Yes. The Schwere Panzer Abteilung 102 lost all of its Tigers between Mid June 44 to Sept 44. it was then sent back to Germany to refit and start again.

I dont know where this tank number 242 was lost. I will try and figure out who the TC was but am not sure I will have that sort of detail, but I am sure one of our members does. But I will certainly keep digging and see if I can answer the question.

Ok I found the name of the company commander for the 2nd company in Normandy. Captain Endemann. Havent found the names of all the members of the company but there is very likely a site out there for them.

The tank in question was probably under the command of a Unterscharfuhrer and was a wing man for one of the leaders in the company but thats about all I can sort out right now.

The other tidbit I forgot to include earlier was this unit became the 502 SPzAbt and was sent to the East with King Tigers to deal with Russian Armor.

Hope this helps

Dave

DMNamiot:

Thanks, that's useful information. Hopefully, you can find more.

Also, did sPzAbt 102 lose its Tigers after D-Day to the British or US?.....air attacks or Allied tanks?

Thanks again for the help.

As already noted s.SS.Pz.Abt.102 lost all of it's Tiger Is between Normandy and Seine with the last few being blown up by the crew at the river. This unit played a key role in the battles around Hill 112 along with 9.SS-Panzer-Division "Hohenstaufen" and 10.SS-Panzer-Division"Frundsberg". It's opponents were primarily Brits and Canadians. Tiger 242 was operational on August 6, 1944 in the vicinity of Chenedolle. I don't have any references after that.

Panther #301, 1./Panzer Regiment 26, of the Großdeutschland doesn't make sense because Panzergrenadier-Division"Großdeutschland"'s panzer regiment was called Panzer-Regiment "Großdeutschland". Panzer-Regiment 26 was the panzer regiment for 26.Panzer-Division. That division was deployed in Italy. The lack of zimmerit and the factory paint scheme (looks like disk pattern) mean this tank was built in September 1944 at the earliest.

GUYS:

Thanks for the information on the two Dragon 1/35 tanks. They arrived two days ago. I got them for only $5.96 each {sm4} (they normally sell for around $65), but they were on clearance.

Whether they portray real or fictional AFV's the price you have them for is a steal.

TANK EXPERTS:

I've got questions on two more German tanks:

1. Does anyone know the name of the commander of Jagdtiger #323? (Jagdtiger #323, sPzJgAbt 653 was abandoned at Neustadt on March 23, 1945).

2. Is the 1/32 FOV #81206 StuG III--Bastogne below a real StuG or fictional?.....If it's based on a real StuG, does anyone know the unit, commander and other details?

In relation to the Jagdtiger off the top of my head Hauptmann scherf comes to mind for some reason. Iam not near any books but, one of the guys near their reference sources can correct me on this

MITCH,

Thanks for the reply.

I Googled Hauptmann Walter Scherf and found that he commanded the Jagdtigers with sPz JgAbt 512. However, Jagdtiger #323 was part of sPz JgAbt 653, the other Jagdtiger unit.

I found the commander's name for Jagdtiger #331 that was with #323 at Neustadt, but still can't find #323's commander.

Can anyone provide any additional information on #323?

I have the following list of gun commanders for 3./s.Pz.Jg.Abt.653 from "Combat History of schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 653" (Karlheinz Munch) but it doesn't associate them with a specific vehicle

1 Oblt. Franz Kretschmer
2 Lt. Hermann Knack
3 Lt. Kasper Goggerle
4 Ofw. Emil Issler
5 Ofw. Fritz Schwarz
6 Fw. Otto Bott
7 Fw. Alfred Schiestl
8 Fw. Heinz Telgmann
9 Fw. Heinz Tolgauer
10 Fw. Erich Bonicke
11 Uffz. Fritz Riedel
12 ?
13 ?
14 ?

Kasper Goggerle commanded a battle group that attacked an American tank column at Neustadt an der Weinstrasse on 22 March 1945. Guns 331 and 323 had to be left behind due to mechanical failures. It doesn't specify which vehicle/s he used.

Regarding the Stug. What is the question? This appears to be a generic model.

FMEHORST:

Thanks for the list. I searched far and wide for #323's commander but came to a dead end.

Concerning the StuG, another collector said it's attached to 3rd panzergrenadier division: Panzer-Abteilung 103 during the siege of Bastogne. I assume it's FOV's generic StuG because I see no identifying marks, numbers, etc. I was hoping someone familiar with the model might have some info on it.

I'm not familiar with the FOV model but for what it's worth Panzer-Abteilung 103 was primarily made up of StuG IIIs.

Panzer-Abteilung 103 AFV makeup on Dec 16 1944
41 x StuG III
2 x Pz.IV
1 x Pz.III
1 x mSPW

34 x StuG III

FMETHORST:

I used your roster info and Googled the names with #323 and got this:

"The 653rd Neustadt, the 3rd Battle Group Company, under the leadership of Lieutenant Caspar Göggler od Göggerle? (331) and (323) with Sergeant Heinz Telgmann:"

Thanks very much for your help for answering my question about #323.
