Rebuild M10 (1 Viewer)

I've never seen one before - full stop! I take it that it was a battlefield modification? Jeff

The M10s all came frm the factory with open turrets. The M10 was intended as a mobile AT gun, however the Tank Destroyers more often ended up as assault guns for the infantry. The open top was a maor liability, so in about 1945 some units started adding an armored roof to some M10s. They weren't common but they did exist, and looked a lot like the one on this model. Late M36s also had some roofs added.

Very Nice..... I love to see this stuff treated like 1/35th scale models. Get it dirty and get it real that is what military stuff is all about. Alex

Hi guys..just like to say thanks to all who took the time to comment on my m10 rebuild, i must say i am knocked out by your kind words!!, i never expected such a reaction to my project, and first posting!!!
As binder001 stated correctly in his reply the tank destroyers were just mobile anti-tank cannons lighty armoured therefore fast, built for hit and run tactics. The thin armour was also their weakness especially the open top, this made the crew extremely vulnerable to artillery/mortar airbursts and snipers.

To give the crew a little added protection some units developed a crude roof system made from battlefield salvage, i dont think that there was any set design, it just depended on the blowtorch talents of the crews.

If you visit the tankdestroyersociety.com go to item 3, scroll down to more on m10. Scroll down, there you will see a couple of pics of a well used m10 with added roof armour. ( i based my conversion on these photos.)

i really dont know how common this conversion was, but i just had to have one in my collection, so when andy released the french m10 there was no going back!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again guys.
