Hi Guys,
A little while ago I went over to visit the King & Country Store in Pacific Place right here in the heart of Hong Kong.
The purpose of my visit was to see the special video presentation we had been working on for the last few days celebrating the extraordinary life of our late Queen, ElizabethⅡ.
The main part of the video presentation was made up of vintage photos of the Queen from her childhood, up through her teenage years and military service during WWⅡ.
Then afterwards her long happy marriage to Prince Philip and her years as monarch of Great Britain and the Commonwealth especially, in our case, the former Crown Colony of Hong Kong.
While at the store I saw many ‘passersby’ stop and look at the images of the Queen on our large screen... and then take photos of our photos!!!
Afterwards, I decided to go and visit the British Consulate, which is located near Pacific Place and view the many floral tributes that many Hong Kong people have been putting all around the building ever since the Queen’s passing last week.
As I came onto the scene I was awestruck by the sheer volume of flowers, photos and written messages on display, there were thousands of them!
At the same time there was a long line of orderly and patient citizens, many with their own floral tributes, waiting and moving along to quietly pay their own respects to the late Queen.
To say it was moving and emotional would be a simple understatement.
Most of those taking part in this unique moment were fondly remembering a different time in Hong Kong’s not-so-long history that saw a small, barren rock with just a few farmers and fisher folk turn itself into one of the most amazing and successful ‘Asian Tiger’ economies.
For 156 years Britain was the colonial power here and over those same years provided, for the most part, stable, fair minded government together with law and order that enabled Hong Kong people to grow and prosper in a free enterprise economy.
For 45 of those years, ElizabethⅡwas our Queen and oversaw much of the city’s incredible success.
This outpouring of genuine affection and fond regret at her passing is a tribute to both herself and a time gone by.
It’s often been said that the British are not very good at running their own country… But they are exceptionally good at running other people’s!
Nowhere was that more evident than in this once barren, little rock resting in the South China Sea called… Hong Kong.
All the best and… God Save the Queen and Long Live The King!
Andy
