Gentlemen

Alex's wonderful job on the blitz has brought this question to mind - Repaint or Not to Repaint? His work is unbelieveable - true mastercraft.

But, I have thought from time to time to repaint some Germans Foot Soldiers in AK Colors to expand my dioramas - sometimes I wonder if thats a good idea or not? You can do it - and it of course will effect the value of your K&C Set because of it. So do you do it or not or just wait on Andy to produce something more for the Range? But that could take many months...

Questions, Questions - Life is full of Questions???????

Well, if you believe that K&C sets are going to continue to increase in value as they have in the past, buy one or two extra sets, and then the increase in value on the extra sets will pay for the cost of the sets you repaint.

If you're only buying one and you're concerned about value, I wouldn't do it. If not, go ahead.

Yes i agree,only paint multiples.

Rob

It's your collection, do what you want with it, don't worry about "resale value"; if you're in this for resale value, you're in it for all the wrong reasons.

A customer of mine had an AK 20 that he repainted for the Russian Front and repainted the crew as well; that piece is worth big money now, but he does not care, he wanted it for the Eastern Front and that is that. He also painted a winter white WS 13 Panzer grey, again for the Eastern Front. The winter WS 13 again goes for big money; again, he does not care.

Hey Ron-

These guys are all spot on in my opinion. I would also add that if you are somewhat unsure of your painting abilities, either hire a pro, like I have done before or paint some plastic. Nothing beats plastic for trying new ideas/ options.

I believe that I am in the Toy Soldier Hobby for all the right reasons - thank you. And you are correct its my collection I can do with it as I want display - repaint and even resale if I choose.

Not all of us have the Luxury to get our collections at the dealers price - we have to pay retail.

Ron

Those of us who paid retail shouldn't be complaining. Its the poor guys who have paid e-bay prices that have that right!

Ron,
Never said you weren't in the hobby for all the right reasons; I meant you in general, not you specifically. Relax, ok.

Secondly, I don't collect 54mm or haven't you noticed my dioramas are all in 20mm? And if I did collect K & C, what difference would it make what I pay for something vs what you do; your question had nothing to do with price, it had to do with whether or not to repaint something.

Yeah, I guess you could resell stuff you buy Ron.

You are a good guy and I like you a lot.

We have discussed this issue about weather a person has a right to sell any part of his collection and still meet the approval of some - of being a collector - And I get tried of it - really.

If that is not what you meant - so be it - we have no problems. As for those others - well  - I think you know what I am thinking.......

The reason why I started this tread it asked a simple set of questions on our collections:

1) Do you want to repaint things in general?

2) If you repaint your figures - what are your thoughts on the value of your figures?

3) Would a manufactuer like K&C eventually make the item you want to repaint in that color anyway?

and of course several other off shoot questions of the like.

This conversation is a little unseemly so please take it offline.

Bottom line is this; if you are concerned about resale value, don't repaint your items as repainting, no matter how minor, will kill the resale value. If you are not, paint away to suit your taste.

Either way, do what makes you happy, because that is the purpose of a hobby, to make us happy and forget about our troubles for awhile..........

What are the possibilities of a professionally repainted K/C piece still going for greater than retail? If there are collectors who might be frustrated at the lack of mfg. support for a favorite war theatre, would they jump on a perfect painted model that is on their want list. Can the repaint market become an investment, as such? ............Michael

Bring up two very good points for our discussion - repainting actually creates - limited edition or rare products. What is everyones take on that idea?

Take for instance Treefrog is now selling the "Prieto Panzer" in the AK colors - the Panzer 1 retails for $69 and is being sold for $150 (and the Panzer 1 is just retired) - I doubt that Andy will make another Panzer 1 in AK colors - so is this worth the investment or not? I am undecided??

I personally like the the repaint on the Panzer 1 - great work! But, I am interested in everyones opinion on this. :D

Ron

As a collector, I'm not really interested in repaints. Don't get me wrong, Alex is a craftsman, actually an artist of the highest order (I think Andy should hire him), but I'm interested in the real thing. I can only afford one of everything so I'm not about to have it repainted.

Since you mention the word investment, if I decided to sell an item, I don't think it would have much value as a repainted item. Since, if I sell an item, I'm plowing the money back into K & C, reducing the value of an item isn't too interesting to me.

I'm actually considering buying the Afrika Corps repaint of the panzer I, for the simple reason that I would not buy or display the LAH version.

It's not really an LAH version per se but the actual tank that was involved with the invasion of Poland as a Panzer unit. You could actually have the tank commander repainted in Wehrmacht colors or display it without the commander.

Louis

You can always have one on displayed being knock out by the Allies :D

I have no problems repainting my stuff. It is mine I paid for it. It may ruin the value for others not me if I enjoy doing the work and the results. I can always paint it again. On the other hand If I am looking to find an obscure postwar piece and someone screwed it up with a bad paint job that is a train of a different color. The question becomes did that person enjoy the fruits of their labor. I don't have to buy it. If it was obscure than the value rises on the existing pieces does it not? I enjoy the work that I put into it. I enjoy the hobby for various reasons and very few have to do with money.
