ive been making a diorama 18x12 inches a retreat from moscow. Its not quite finished yet. Its completely scratch built and I enjoyed experimenting with new materials.
The ground is earth mixed with pva glue. The trees and the ruined buliding are garden twigs and painted balsa wood. I burnt some of the wood and I think it worked well but its best not done in the house as I did!!
The frozen water and icicles are clear sealant I think it works especially well in the frozen tracks.
The broken cart, broken cannon and various other boxes and lost equipment are shaped and painted balsa wood . This material is very easy to work and shapes are easy to cut with it.
I visited a local hobby shop to find snow but it was expensive and too much for what I wanted so I crushed rock salt to a fine powder in a pestle and mortar.
I shall probably use tradition soldiers for the wounded and dead etc but only about 5 figures. they make dead horses and retreat from moscow soldiers.
I will buy kits and paint them myself.
A couple of pics should be on the way.

Your diorama sounds interesting. Plenty of different methods to try when making scenery. I would be cautious if using rock salt with metal figures. The salt is a corrosive and can harm metal. I know, once I placed a power drill on a bag of salt and it ruined the drill after a few weeks. Leadmen

Sounds like a fun prodject! post some pictures when your done. You could also try baking soda for your snow instead of the salt if your worried about your soldiers rusting up. Fusiler toy soldiers makes a whole retreat from moscow range and also has some little add on pieces which might intrest you ,like camp fires, muskets, sleds, and a few other things also.

You might want to try and convert a few plastic figures also, if your into that. I once saw a whole set of converted plastic figures done for a retreat from moscow diorama. You have alot of liberty you can take with the moscow retreat because the army was so rag tag and wore whatever they could find. You can use almost any plastic figures out there and just add some two part putty over coats and you,ve got a napoleonic!

Here are the pics of his diorama ...

Thanks for the good advice re salt corrosion i didnt think of that. So i suppose its best to use plastic figures instead.
If any body knows of any 1/32 plastic napoleonics that are suitable Ill be glad to hear it.
I take the point about converting plastics and I may give that a go too.
Thanks again
