ive been making a diorama 18x12 inches a retreat from moscow. Its not quite finished yet. Its completely scratch built and I enjoyed experimenting with new materials.
The ground is earth mixed with pva glue. The trees and the ruined buliding are garden twigs and painted balsa wood. I burnt some of the wood and I think it worked well but its best not done in the house as I did!!
The frozen water and icicles are clear sealant I think it works especially well in the frozen tracks.
The broken cart, broken cannon and various other boxes and lost equipment are shaped and painted balsa wood . This material is very easy to work and shapes are easy to cut with it.
I visited a local hobby shop to find snow but it was expensive and too much for what I wanted so I crushed rock salt to a fine powder in a pestle and mortar.
I shall probably use tradition soldiers for the wounded and dead etc but only about 5 figures. they make dead horses and retreat from moscow soldiers.
I will buy kits and paint them myself.
A couple of pics should be on the way.
