This is a painting entitled "Ride for Liberty" painted by the American artist Eastman Johnson. Johnson claimed the painting was based on an actual incident he witnessed on March 2, 1862, when near Manassas, Virginia, when he saw a young slave couple with their child on horseback fleeing toward Union lines. This painting now resides at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.
