Hi All,

I saw this movie (recommended on one of these threads, I think) about the American Civil War.

Starring the Spiderman actor (what a yarn - sorry couldn't resist that...:)).

Some really good cavalry action sequences.

Always liked this movie. Thought the raid on Lawrence was especially well done. The film gave a good idea of what the bushwhacking nature of the war in Missouri was like. -- Al

This is an exceptional and rare movie-rare because it had the guts to highlight the pointlessness of a local attritional struggle between the evenly matched enemies of Union Regulars-Jayhawkers and their Southern equivalents-Bushwhackers. Fully concur with Al's comments-Brutality was probably worse in Missouri than anywhere else during the civil war, spawning an enduring climate of violence epitomised in the post war James/Younger gang's exploits.

One scene from Ride with the Devil that stays firmly in my mind was the accurate depiction of how monotonously long it took to recover from a gunshot wound in those days-often glossed over by Hollywood but certainly not in this movie.

Bob, funny that you mention the James/Younger gang as I just watched The Long Riders, again, two nights ago. One of my favorite 'westerns' because of Stacey Keach's Jesse and David Carradine's Cole. They walked off with the show, although the whole of the supporting cast was superb. Topped off with Ry Cooder's soundtrack, this is a great movie. -- Al

Not much in the way of civil war and western movies anymore. At least the nineties had Gettysburg,Glory,Tombstone.I thought they were all great movies.Anyone watch Hell on Wheels?I seem to be the only one. Also like new series called Gunslingers.

There is an old axiom in Hollywood, often repeated by film producers throughout the years, that states "Civil War movies never make any money". Except for the motion picture events such as Gone With The Wind and Birth of a Nation, the statement is basically true.

The poet Walt Whitman witnessed first hand the horrors of the Civil War while serving as a nurse for wounded soldiers. He feared that the real war that he and the men he treated had experienced would never find its way into the history books. His reasoning was that it would be too horrific to put into words and future generations would simply not believe that so much blood was spilled between the citizens of America. As we know he was wrong but perhaps his reasoning, in some respects, is more applicable when aligned with the apparent unpopularity of Civil War Cinema.

I watched this movie on the recommendation of this forum and I enjoyed it immensely

Just noticed I mixed up the Keach brothers. James played Jesse and and Stacey played Frank. It was James' Jesse that I thought was so good even though Stacey did good work, as well. To paraphrase Cole, "First getting shot, then getting married, and misidentification...bad habits." -- Al

Thanks for the recommendation, guys! I watched this last night. A good action movie. The knife fight scene was good. I did find the general acting a little stiff and rather too mannered at times.
