Rio de Janeiro was the winner over Madrid in the final round of voting. The committee delivered an unexpectedly early knockout blow to Chicago, which was eliminated in the first round. Tokyo was ousted in the second.

The Olympics were awarded to a South American city for the first time...

This is going to be good for the Brazil visibility and to prompt the self steam of the poor population with some examples to follow.

I am looking forward to see how they will do for the World Cup in 2014…

John - I agree with you! I take a train into the city everyday for work - I can't imagine the problems that would be caused in preparation for the Olympics and the event itself..

I have no problem with the 2016 Olympics being held in Chicago. It would have been nice. But, the way it was managed, it felt like the big bully came to town to "steal the thunder" from the other entrants...the "bully" lost!

This is the first for Brazil and So. America to host the Olympics. It's time to "share the wealth" to other countries...this is a teachable moment (to borrow the expression of the great "O")!

I have been to Rio and it's one of the most beautiful city I have ever seen in terms of scenery. Great setting for the summer Olympics and glad to see that finally South America is getting their first O. games (not Oprah )
