Earl Weaver passed away Saturday at age 82. HoF manager for the Orioles (for the uniformed) with 4 pennants and one World Series. My question, how good do you really consider him? One series with 4 twenty game winners on the team at one time and the Robinsons and Boog Powell in the line-up? I think I might have done as well. :wink2: But it does bring back to memory the glory yrs. Chris

Hi Chris,

no doubt Earl had some teams loaded with talent, but then again so did alot of those Yankee/ Red sox/Tiger (sorry Cleveland) that were in the AL East at the time, I just loved him as a coach, no non-sense, give me a 3 run homer any day type of coach :) he wasn't doing commercials like Billy Martin, though as many smokes (cigarettes) as he went through during a game he should have had a contract with Phillip Morris tobacco co.:) and the fights with the umps!! to this day nobody could take on a umpire like Weaver and have you rolling in the floor!!! so yea, good times indeed, hope there is a piece of Heaven for Earl, he was one of the best...Sammy

Hi Chris. Huge loss for baseball and the O's. I think he was a terrific manager. True, he had some stacked teams but he still had to balance the egos, play the right people, and handle the pitching staff correctly. He was, by all accounts, an extremely fair manager to his players. Knowing when to let your players play their game, do what they are good at, and not try to make them fit a certain pattern are all things that Weaver excelled at. Plenty of teams have had the talent and never gone as far as they should have, but Earl got performances and results. Earl was one of a kind.:smile2: -- Al

Thanks guys. He was certainly entertaining. Read Jim Palmer's book if you can find a copy sometime. Great inside look at the relationship between him and Weaver. One of my best possessions is a ball I got Weaver to sign at the old timer's game in St Pete. Got one from Palmer and B Robinson also. :smile2: I remember the frustration when we lost the series to Pittsburgh after being up 3-0. But the win over the Reds was sweet! Chris

Same pain over the Pirate loss, but I remember the loss to the Mets even more. We should have won them both. :rolleyes2: Those were great O's teams and great memories. Never will forget Brooks eating the Reds alive.:wink2: -- Al

Growing up in the 50,s in St Louis Stan Musial was my favorite ballplayer. Never forgot, my grandpa took me to Sportsman Park, home of the Cardinals, I was about 8 years old and Musial hit two home runs in this game. I was so excited I cried!
Not only a great ballplayer, but a greater person.
Gary
