just watched this...surprisingly good...gory in spots...but a fresh look at Christ...not your average Christian film...

Risen is a 2016 American biblical drama film directed by Kevin Reynolds; it was conceived from a screenplay written by Reynolds and Paul Aiello. The film stars Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Peter Firth, and Cliff Curtis, and details a Roman soldier's search for Jesus' body following his Resurrection.

Not yet, but I have on my list. I had not heard of it until it showed up in my OnDemand list.

Great movie. I love the way they did it from the Roman soldiers point of view. Gives a fresh look at an old but great story.

I bought this on a whim..I really liked it...well done, well acted. Almost missed Cliff Curtis as Jesus..Michael

My devout wife saw it. She said it was "OK". I listened to two secular Bible scholars discuss the film on a podcast. They enjoyed dissecting where the film makers got their sources.

I really liked this show. Not sure about so many Legionaries in leather armor rather than hamata or segmentata armor, but still pretty good from a historical perspective.

My wife really liked it. I thought the drama and action was really good.

We are not Bible-thumpers, but do regularly attend church for context.

I liked it too. Here is my Amazon review -

"This is a religious movie. Its focus is the resurrection story of Jesus and it sticks, properly, very closely to the words of the Biblical Gospels. The new angle though, is the story is seen through the eyes of Roman tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) who is sent by Pilot to investigate the disappearance of Christ’s body. This has him examining the tomb, interrogating witnesses and ultimately joining the disciples in those last days prior to the ascension.

For those interested in such things, the film opens with a sharp battle between a Roman century and a hill fort full of Zealots. There are a few visceral scenes here and in the crucifixion but nothing that marches Gibson’s Passion of the Christ. The Romans were never the Red Cross but some of them shown here are a bit less hardy than might be expected. They were I guess witnessing astonishing things.

Mostly though, the historical scenes looked good to me and the journey of Clavius is a fairly reasonable one. It’s probably a bit slow overall but it is certainly reverent regarding its subject matter. I found the generally bubbly representation of the disciples a little strange but ultimately this worked for me. Indeed, it was interesting seeing how the post resurrection events were explored. This film is ideally for main-stream believers and might be useful in schools of faith. As a Lutheran, I enjoyed it. Recommended 3 1/2 stars."

My daughter and I both saw this when it first came out. We both thought it was well done.
