I just saw that PBS will be having programs on General Lee and Grant. The one on Lee airs on Monday, January 3, and the one on Grant on January 10. Both are on at 9 pm EST.

Thanks for the notice, I had not seen that. I've been listening to Shelby Foote's Civil War narrative on the way to work. Read the book years ago. Still one of the best secondary sources on ACW.

Thanks for the tip Brad.I agree that Foote's history is one of the best reads on the Civil War.

I wasn't aware that Foote's book was on audiobooks. I will have to look for it. I would imagine that a lot of companies will be dusting off a lot of old classics this year.

Someone at work downloaded it on I POD and made CD copies for me. Only vols 2 & 3 available. Figure that one out! So far he's made 18 cds of vol 2 and about 6 more to go.

I've been looking for when they're gonna repeat the one on Lee..haven't seen it yet. Grant's is scheduled for several more times on PBS.. Another fantastic read on the Civil War is "Co. Aytch" by Sam Watkins of Tennessee. He was a Confederate Veteran of both theaters of war and these are his memoirs..He saw the worst of it and tells all..

Good call. Watkins' book is a true classic of ACW literature. Well worth the time to read. -- Al

Saw the Grant episode and liked it, although the ending was abrupt and caught me by surprise. Wanted to know more post ACW, I guess. Haven't seen the Lee episode yet. -- Al

I visited the house where Grant wrote his memoirs and died in NY. There is a famous picture of him sitting in a rocker on the porch. It's now on the grounds of a prison. All the interior furniture is original from when he lived there. Apparently they preserved it for historical purposes. It's an interesting place and not far from the Saratoga and Ticonderoga battlefields.

I had same reaction. I rewound the DVDR to make sure I hadn't missed something.
