I just got back from seeing the new Robin Hood with my son.. First, I'm a Robin Hood fan - have lots of Robin Hood figures, toys, books, games etc. The Errol Flynn version has always been my favorite...

I loved this movie! My 27 year old son also loved it... It's not perfect - but it's great.. Russell Crowe was excellent as are all the actors... I don't know why it's getting any negative reviews...

I'll be interested to get your reactions to it...

Jim

Jim, I spent my evening in the same way and had a similar reaction. I, too, really enjoyed this film. Without giving anything away, I enjoyed how the film showed Robin Hood in a different way than we usually see.

It is hard to describe, but I enjoyed the way the film ended. It was if the whole film presented Robin Hood in new way, showing the 'backstory' if you will. However, at the end, it leaves you knowing what comes next in the characters life, as we are all familiar with the next part of the story.

Only thing I didn't like was the medieval 'Higgins boats'.

Russell Crowe did a good job as usual, and the 'merry-men' were enjoyable as well. I will say that I am a huge Ridley Scott fan, and have greatly enjoyed his past work. This new film is one that will certainly be added to the DVD collection!

I haven't seen this but the trailers look good.Does it portray this period in a more realistic way?

I saw it yesterday day at the 12:01 am showing....All I can say is that it is fantastic!:) Well worth the ticket price! Mark, it totally in my opinion really shows the period very realistically.

Noah,

I agree with everything you commented about. I'm not a big fan of the "higgins boats" either - but it's a small point and one that I could pass off quite easily.. I'll go see it again while it's still out in the theaters...

I hope it does well enough at the box office so that we can see what is coming next!

Jim

What are these Higgins boats?I've seen a lot of complaints about them.

They look like WWII Normandy invasion landing craft.. at least the medieval version.. They don't play a big part in the movie - it's just one of those Hollywood things...

True. It wasn't a big deal, just an odd thing in an otherwise great movie.

I hope it does well enough at the box office so that we can see what is coming next!

That would be amazing, as the ending is so set up for a sequal. I would be all for it!

Stick with the Errol Flyn version........
You knew it was fantasy and enjoyed the wonderful character actors.
This new version tries to be something it is not. Sending a political message with fabricated history. Russell Crow peaked with "Gladiator" and is now an overweight wanabe adventure hero.
Sorry guys I just couldn't get into it.

I guess I don't connect any Robin Hood story or any movie, for that matter with any kind of political message... That stuff NEVER enters my mind when watching a movie like this.

There will be detractors - understood.. but I loved it.. it's definitely a different movie than the Errol Flynn version.. I love them both for different reasons...

Me either. I personally don't understand why some try to undermine the magic of movies with defining some underlying agenda. It is not that some movies don't have them but they are fewer than many imagine and even if they do, enjoying a movie is a personal experience and the viewer is free to ignore whatever message may be imbedded.

I am really looking forward to this. I love all the Robin Hood versions, from the classic Flynn "fun" romp to the BBC series and Crowe and Scott are my movie dream team. Of course I loved Master and Commander as well and would love to see that crew return for another go.

Seen the movie today,as a film from Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe not one of their best, sorry to say,Russell Crowe apparently walked out of an interview when his accent was given some rough critique and its of little wonder, his accent throughout the movie was a mixture of English,Scottish and Irish. The actor who played the Welsh Alan Adale was even worse. As a spectacle it was great, some of the attention to detail was well done, but the 12th century Higgins Boats perhaps stretched even my imagination a little, was expecting the french to have a Mulberry Harbour in tow.Russell Crowe should have spent some time embedded with a family in Northern England to perfect his accent a little more. Not one for my small dvd collection. ken

Well...............I was with it until "Eowyn" attacked the Higgins boats leading the "Lost Boys" or were they "Ewoks?"

Not a bad movie with a likable cast. A older gent sitting near by liked Cate Blanchett but not the Higgins boats. Sure they could have gotten a younger prettier Marion but Cate gives the story some weight. My daughter asked if the movie was going to all battle scenes from the start. I said "hopefully yes!" I wasn't disappointed on that.

Politics. Ha. I read Atlas Shrugged and Ayn Rand hated the Robin Hood story because she got it all wrong! The rich got rich in the Robin Hood story by stealing from the productive, making them poor. Robin helped them get it back.

I haven't seen it yet, but I was wondering why the "Gladiator" is now playing Robin Hood  I am a big fan of which actors play which parts (sometimes I get a little snobby about it  ) but I would see Crowe as a gladiator, hard to imagine him as Robin Hood, possible role confusion. Also he's Australian, you mean to tell me that there are no English actors talented enough to take on the role of Robin Hood  Personally I would've liked to see Liam Neeson as Robin Hood, after his dominance in movie Taken.
But I'll give Crowe a chance, I haven't seen it yet, so I can't make too many judgments, just initial thoughts about Crowe as Hood.

I felt much the same way when I first heard that Russell Crowe was to play Robin..but I liked him in it very much.. I didn't get hung up on the accent - in fact, it was something that I noticed in the film one way or the other.. it certainly wasn't off putting to me.. Maybe I'm just not that critical.. I just know what I like and what I don't..

There are many reasons actors and directors work together - success being an important one as well as the enjoyment of working together.. I suspect both of these points were factors in the decision..

Russell Crowe has many faults but one that he doesn't is his acting abiliting. Also he picks good quality parts and Ridley Scott knows how to make a movie.
