Not to insult your collection but East of India is my favorite company out there- there is no way Conte can hope to be in the same league as EoI- yes, that is my very biased opinion.:D

Ken does his figures right- his samurai have cavalry and supporting ashigaru infantry and some arty pieces. There is no doubt in my mind that these Romans will set the standard for Romans collectors out there.

Now, if we could just get him to release the legions, everything would be all good :)

OH NO! Are you telling me not to look at these guys in the flesh:eek:. I'm still deciding if I should get those plumeless Russian guys:D. If EofI is as good as the pics, well got to go get another cabinet!

BTW-No insult taken:). Always interested in other collectors opinions. I like all these little warriors.

Yes, a Pigmy legion! :D

Actually of course if you do have these chaps in different scales (mine weigh in at 54mm) you can always put the smaller figures to the rear. That way it gives quite a nice feel of added depth to a diorama. This works very well if the larger figures to the front are on a flat plain and then the rear ranks are on a hill say 2 to 3 feet to the rear on the diorama. It does in my opinion looks better than having all the figures the same scale.

Ken,
That's kind of what I do when I'm mixing figures from different manufacturers in dioramas. I don't have too much of an idea about perspective, etc. I just arrange my figures in a layout that seems natural to me. That's why it takes a few tries at various layouts before I get it right (for me anyway).
Cheers

Anyway you look at it, you can't go wrong with Romans- I gave, what I believe was a pretty good review of the Conte Roman War Galley which I picked up last month to kick off my Romans collection. My only pick on Conte's ancients is that they look excessively buff- otherwise, I have no real qualms with em. If I wasn't so broke, I would have taken advantage of the 2-1 sale and got some of the cavalry.

Ken does the best job of anyone with ancients. While St. Petes are fantastic looking, you really gotta be pulling down some scratch to amass a sizeable collection of their Romans. In my opinion, to have any credibility as an Ancients company, you have to deliver:

1.) Ranks and ranks of foot troops- ashigaru, hoplites, etc- EoI does all that. His selection of figures allow you to customize the size of your formations as you can afford them.

2.) Cavalry- you need dashing cavalry- again, Ken delivers time and again with this- no boring poses- the cavalry are engaged and ready to destroy.

3.) Appropriate siege engines- Ken does this as well.

Of course, we haven't seen these Romans yet but given everything he has done so far, we will not be disappointed- I'll stake my 1/506 battalion crest on it:D

I think 2008 is gonna be a great year to be a Romans collector- EoI's offering, Blackhawk is coming out with their Battle of Zama line, and even Conte with the War Galley and the 2-1 sale- all these companies are delivering the might of Rome to us.

Excellent 4 point list! The only problem I have is with the Cav poses. While I like the action poses, there doesn't ever seem to be enough troopers to make an adequate charge that works with a larger infantry formation(IMHO). It seems most ranges I've found from Naps to Greeks & Romans seem to limit their action poses to around six figures:(.

BTY I'll bet my 3/7 Cav Crest(Gary Owen!) there was a lot of boring standing around poses even in ancient times:D:D!.

Saw the pics of your war galley, AWESOME! RAMMING SPEED! Just one question couldn't tell from the pics, (my eyes not your skill:)), but does it have a corvus (I think that's how its spelled), that nasty bit of engineering to grapple on to enemy galleys and allow your legions to board and destroy?

Yeah- some things have changed over the years- we now fight wars with tanks, and smart bombs and umanned predator drone but alas, Hurry up and Wait will always be the creedo of the grunt- from the times of Troy to the current situation in the GWOT. :D

A classic never really goes out of style.

Let's go Ken- GIMME MY ROMANS!! :D:D

Yo Troopers, while on the subject of Romans does anyone know if there was ever a Mark Anthony made by anyone. My Wife asked tonight for me to look out for one its our sons name, even better on horseback then it will go with all my Cavalry "YES".
Bernard.

KC has a Mark Antony figure in their Egyptian line- comes with Caesar as well. Occasionally you might find one from St. Pete but I cannot immediately recall one in the past 5-6 years. The KC figure is not mounted.

I'd suggest plastics- I think Atlantic has done him mounted.

Yo Trooper Caesar, please do not swear at me "PLASTIC" lol. Thanks for the info will have a look at KC but get this Troopers I dont like their stuff lol "WHAT" like mine to look like toy soldiers not museum models, but must be honest they are very good, just not my scene.
Bernard.

Thanks for all the nice words one and all.

Well I thought I would give you a sneak preview; however I am still keeping quite a lot secret until we get closer to the production date.

Here are just four of the figures which will be part of the initial launch. Notice I have deliberately hidden the shield designs to give nothing away to the competition!

Production schedule is still pretty uncertain and has to be confirmed by our factory but here is what I currently believe it to be:

June: Initital launch of 20 figures.
August: Additional 10 figures.
November: Yet another 10 figures.

So we are hoping to have 40 figures to start this new range for EOI by the end of the year. I will of course give you much more information closer to the time that each batch is about to be launched.

Anyway enough of this rambling and here is the sneak preview:

Hi Ken

They look great I am very interested in these. Any plans for massed Infantry formations in shield walls or other formations?

Keep up the great work

All the best

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks! Mass infantry formations; yes very much so! Even an EOI modular turtle is in the planning if this range sells well.

Unlike other EOI ranges most of these figures will be sold as single figures. There is quite a lot of variation with for example the legionnaires in both sword and pilum throwing poses so really the collector can buy what is needed to create a custom diorama of choice.

Hi Ken,

A modular turtle? Wow! I hope your series sells well as I can hardly wait for the turtle! Do you have any estimated time at which this series of modular sets might be available? It will certainly be high on my want list!

Keep up the fine work!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Thanks Pat

Good to hear from you. Well its going to take probably until Christmas to find out if this range is successful enough to warrant a full turtle. As I'm sure you know I can't tell on the popularity of range from the initial orders, it has to be judged from the reorders by dealers.

All being well as it takes about 6 months from the planning to the production stage I guess we are talking Spring 2009. Wow that seems a long way off!

Is that for the turtle or for the actual Roman range to start? Thanks Joel

Hi Joel,

The range we hope to launch in June of this year. If you go back a page to page 3 then the estimated production schedule is there.

ROMA VICTA!!!

MAN ALIVE!!! I AM SO JAZZED ABOUT THESE FIGURES!!!! I've said it once, I've said it a BILLION times- 2008- the year of the ROMAN!!!

Ken- don't you start backpeddling now- you can't go and tell us you may have a turtle planned only to fizz out and say, well, we can't do it- it's cool- we can wait till Spring 2009- after all, a turtle is slow....:p:p

After all, to be honest, EoI is known for their SUPERB massed troop formations- the Greek Phalanx, the Ashigaru- for you guys to pass on the turtle would be a little un-EoIish.

HAIL CAESAR!!!!
