Hi guys,

A Prussian artillery set from the Seven Years War. A Rose miniatures set. I am quite pleased with them as they show some progress. Building some courage to have a go at a Matt figure to try and improve my skills. As such, bought a 100mm Union Cavalry Sgt to have a go at.

Cheers

Gary

Hi Gary,

Nice paint job!

In my humble opinion they would look better matte. Do have a try, if you can paint that well using gloss, you should have no trouble with matte.

I notice you call these "Rose Miniatures", I guess because you purchased them off eBay from John Eden?

They aren't by Rose, they are "knock offs" of the figures and gun by "Ulrich Puchala", the great German sculptor. I understand that John purchased a big lot of stuff from a guy in Germany (not Ulrich), some time ago, and he assumed that Ulrich was "out of the game".

Ulrich is still very much "in the game" but concentrating on larger scales.

Berliner Zinnfiguren in Berlin still sell Puchala 54's under the name of Puchala or Mauritz. Have a look; fantastic range of 7YW and Napoleonics, WWII, at reasonable prices, and much better castings than the ones you bought from John.

Keep up the good work.

Happy Collecting (and painting)

Yes, nice paint work Gary, the gloss really brings out the colours ....

Oberstinhaber beat me to the reply about the origins of these figures.....

Roger that. Gammage never produced a Prussian field artillery set. These are copies of Puchala figures that Eden sells in his catalog.

Müritz-Miniaturen had taken over Ulrich Puchala's 54mm SYW Prussians, when he began focusing on larger-scale individual figures (90mm and 120mm). Müritz also took over Puchala's 54mm WWII figures. Looking at his page now, I can see an image for the Prussians, but the catalog fails to load. There is an item on his News page that for those figures, customers should contact Centauro Line Miniatures. So I wonder if Müritz gave up the rights to produce the Prussians.

Eden has a number of figures from other manufacturers in his catalog, including Rose, Phoenix, Puchala, Hecker & Goros, Sanderson (that I can identify).

As far as copying figures goes, Quartermaster Corps also offered these same figures at one time; I have a set that I bought years ago, when I was starting out collecting and painting SYW Prussians. QC sells them as Revolutionary War Hessian artillery, and modifies the officer to hold a flag in one hand. Those, I suspect, are not licensed copies.

Prost!

Guys,

Thanks for the response as ever it's an education on here! I'll be sure to look up the maker you named as the castings are great. I wish I had seen the pictures you chaps provided before as only had a couple off pin interest to paint from.

Thanks

Gary

Sorry, everyone, I have a bad edit in my previous post, which might cause confusion. What I meant to say is that for the Puchala 54mm WW II figures, Müritz is directing customers to Centauro Line. Müritz has an image on his site that suggests that he still makes the 54mm Seven Years War figures, but the catalog fails to load. I apologize for any confusion.

I've emailed Müritz in the meantime, to ask whether he still makes the SYW Prussians. I'll post back with whatever reply I get.

Prost!

Hi, all, I got a reply from Ralf Töpfer at Müritz-Miniaturen. He confirmed that MM still produces Puchala's 54mm Prussians. He sent me a URL to the online shop page, which I post here, for anyone who's interested in looking at the figures:

http://www.mueritz-miniaturen.de/sh...54_mm_figuren_europa_xviii._jhd._preussen.htm

I'm not sure about the status of the figures John Eden sells. It's possible that they are unlicensed copies.

Prost!

Hi Baron,

That's right!

But as I understand what John said to me some time ago, he didn't copy them (please see my earlier post) He bought a rather large "job lot" of Puchala stuff from "a fellow in Germany". Apparently, John is now a "go to" man when people have collections of odd stuff to dispose of.

John assumed (wrongly, as it turned out) that Ulrich "was no longer in the game". He is now aware that that assumption was in error.

Thanks for talking to Ralf, and clarifying his position. Ralf's prices are the best.

May I also say that you and John (Obee) have both been dragging the chain lately! Neither of you have posted on the "Army of Frederick the Great" thread for far too long. But I live in hope!

Happy Collecting,

Brad,

thanks for making contact, and the good news that these wonderful figures are still being produced :)

I also see that Ralf also is making 7YW Prussians from the retired MiniWelt moulds, so even more good news :)

I'll see what I can do this weekend ...............

Puchala is here : http://www.puchala-figuren.de/?q=en
By experience I konw he answer to the mail you send him . :)

True, but as was mentioned above, Ulrich does not produce his 54mm figures anymore. When he switched to producing larger-scale figures (90mm and 120mm) about nine or ten years ago, he contracted with Müritz-Miniaturen to produce his 54mm Seven Years' War and WW II figures. Müritz still produces the Seven Years' War Prussians, but they have passed the WW II figures back to Centauro Line (see post above).

Prost!

I have finally finished painting my set of Prussian Horse Artillery and thought I'd show them off.

My painting style is in matte, and I have posed them on a diorama base I recently constructed.

I still have the limber to assemble, but haven't got the horses or driver, but I may substitute an alternative couple of horses, or just leave it unhitched?
