Does anyone know the function of this machine being used in Africa by the Royal Engineers during the 1873 Ashanti War? It looks like some kind of steam tractor. Road or bridge construction perhaps?

Thanks Mike--a great site. The only maker I know of doing the Ashanti War is Wm. Hocker. Very interesting conflict.
