Hi all. I have a little teaser here for maker identification please.

I recently bought this quite nice little set of six horses and a limber in one lot - and a Britains 18 pounder in another - the idea being to marry them up and find a few more pieces to eventually make up something that looks like a Britains Set 39 from around the 1950's.

As you can probably see - I'm missing one rider completely from one of the ridden horses - and an arm with whip from another rider. It might help me to find my missing parts - if I can identify the maker of the set of six horses - and the limber - neither of which are Britains - and have absolutely no identification marks at all - anywhere on or under them.

Hope you can help - thanks for all ideas. jb

After a night's sleep - and thinking about identification again on a new day - I think that I have solved the problem.

It was almost embarrassingly simple - as I have seen this set SO many times before - sitting on a display shelf at Dorset Model Soldiers!!

What fooled me though - was that this version was one of the alternate ones offered by them to the one I've seen before ( they do them as standing, walking and galloping). So...... I looked up their online catalogue - and confirmed my guess - as there they were.

The six horses, two riders and the limber are from Dorset Model Soldiers' Set 1509 -and this is the version at the gallop.

The good news is therefore, that I will be able to find the missing pieces - and also that there are mounted Officer, Bugler and Gunners available to complete the set up to the specification of the old Britains set 39.

Dorset also offers various guns as well to hook up to the limber - but as I already have an original Britains 18 pounder ( see previous pic.) - also bought recently at a very reasonable price - I think I will hook that one up to the set - once I have restored it all.

Sorry:redface2: jb

Hi Johnny

This will be fun to see! I am wondering what they use for traces to hook the limber to the horse team? Also will you mount all of the horses on one stand or on individual bases?

Cant wait to see how it develops

Chewing over the various alternatives already Dave. I know that Dorset used wire links - but this one came to me with bits of string glued into the castings!!! - Yuk!

As we hope to be moving home soon - I haven't begun to work on this little project yet ( along with a few others too ), but will be concentrating on collecting the various bits and pieces I'll be needing to complete them. Now that I know that it's from Dorset - I can begin collecting parts to complete what I have - and order the pieces that I don't have, such as outriders etc. From the look of the limber - there were a couple of figures sitting atop that - so that's another couple of figures for me to source.

I've also been quietly collecting up some more Household Cavalry troopers - again for restoration, for another RHG project I began earlier. Then there's a rather nice, and interesting little collection of very old Scots Greys, that I picked up to restore................. So........plenty of fun to come later on this year.

BUT the move comes first - and I'm STILL packing up.{sm2}

Just keep on watching the Repairs section later on this year Dave - I'm sure you'll like what you see. :salute:: jb

I must have walked past that set about a dozen times, up in Giles' old premises at the top of the hill, John! I hope mine will eventually look a lot like the old B ritains Set 39. I've always liked it.

Still..............ID'd it in the end!:D Cheers! jb

As I said earlier I cant wait to see what you come up with! I have one more move next year before we settle down for a while in the same location. I am not looking forward to repacking my current sets on display...

Take care Johnny and have a safe move

Dave

Yep - that's the set John - and also the other figures I'll need alongside them. Thanks for the pic .

I've met the two guys that took over - and are keen to carry on the business much the same as Giles did before them. Both are pretty new to the TS business though - so you have to spell out exactly what you want before purchasing.

Cheers buddy - jb
