I ran across this on the web with the following label. Andy do you know about the Royal Marines landing in North Africa in WWII? It may have been training for the later D-Day landings? They are kitted out like the 8th Army.

"THE COAST GUARD LANDS THE BRITISH MARINES - Down the ramps, through the surf and up the beach dash Royal British Marines from US Coast Guard-manned landing craft during final amphibious maneuvers on the Coast of North Africa. The Britains came in aboard a Coast Guard-manned assault transport. Coast Guard landing craft, like these, struck the Coast of France in the initial liberation waves on D-Day."

Here is another:

BRITISH INVADERS LANDED BY THE COAST GUARD - During invasion maneuvers in European combat waters, Coast Guard-manned landing craft hit the beach with Royal British Marines. In this picture, made by a Coast Guard Combat Photographer, the Britains storm along a surf-washed beach in North Africa. Coast Guard landing craft, like these, struck in the intitial invasion waves against the French coast before dawn on D-Day.

This label says European waters but it is the same landing craft. Anyhow a curiosity!

Randy,
With my limited knowledge, I would put them in Africa on a TX. The shorts and lack of extra gear, along with the full wood fake SMLEs kind of give it away. The US and UK landing forces inter-trained prior to the invasion, ecumenical bonding so to speak.

I knew that they did a lot of training off the coast of Ireland but had not known about Africa. It just looks funny seeing guys dressed like the 8th Army coming out of landing craft. Since Andy was in the RM perhaps he will know something of the details.

Looks like the California National Guard at summer camp. Suns out and nobody is shooting at us
