Martin,
I enjoyed that.....brilliant display.....not sure I could identify you in the charge.
Is the Royal Tournament an annual event ?
How does one get tickets or is it by invitation only?
Thanks, Raymond.![]()
Yo Corporal of Horse. That was superb mate really enjoyed it, and of course the drill movements of the Household Cavalry were perfect as you would expect. Can you imagine what it was like facing a full Cavalry charge
.
Bernard.
BTW Martin did you serve under this Officer. I got two of these one for the Life Guard Mounted, and one for the Blues and Royals Mounted, they are shown in my album.
Bernard.
That was great, Martin...that cavalry charge must have been a thrill!
Is it any coincidence that those cadets look like toy soldiers?![]()
No in '81 I had the chushiest of postings as a "trained soldier" at the Guards Depot. I went up town begining of '82 the C.O was Parker-Bowles, that's Prince Charles's currant wife's ex! My wife couldn't stand her.As to facing a charge, When I was in HQ Sqn waiting for my riding course to start and trying to look busy (like you do) I had to stand in a hole in Hyde Park! The hole was spotted during the rehearsal for Major Generals Inspection, too late to fill it as the "canter past in revue order" had already started. As soon as they wheeled around for the "canter forward" I had to stand there like an idiot so none of the horses would trip. I was absolutly sh--ting myself!

Unfortunatly due to government cutbacks "The Tournament" finished a couple of years ago. It was an annual event from about 1890. Martin

I went to the Royal Tournament in the 1980's it was great - loved the Field Gun Run with the RN
I do not know if you are aware but the Tournament is back
The British Military Tournament is launching this year, at Earls Court on 4th and 5th December
I think there is something else happening on that day in London, so you could do both on that weekend
The Tournament has:
THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES:
500 TROOPS
145 HORSES
MASSED BANDS
THE FIELD GUN RUN

That is a good story mates but you weren't likely to be trampled unless one of the riders REALLY had it in for you; horses don't much like to run into things, especially humans. Of course you were preventing much more than a trip; it could have caused a broken leg; noble but understandably scary work.lmao, now that is a brilliant story, nearly getting trampled to death, bet everyone watching was saying whats that Pratt doing standing there lol. Boy I have a few of my own stories like that to tell one day. (Happy Days).

Thanks Martin, that is a great view and yes having that lot come at you would be more than scary. It's true that no horse likes to trample people but when they're coming at you knee to knee there isn't a lot of room to avoid one person. The rule was to role into a ball, that way you get pushed rather than kicked. I've just found this that gives an idea of how much room there is. I assume you know horses? Obviously a great picture as your avatar.

Thanks Martin, that is a great view and yes having that lot come at you would be more than scary.Yes my wife and I own 6 between us, 2 Thoroughbreds, 2 Holsteiners and 2 Irish Sport Horses and we event, which of course evolved from cavalry trials. What breeds do the Householders use? They look a bit Irish to me.
Yo Corporal of Horse, the only problem with Spitfrnd is he gets insubordinate, every now and then, but can't put him on stable duties becuse he enjoys it. Thinking about the Irish Horses, did you ever see the Irish Blue Hussars in my Irish album, had them specially made. When they wanted to get rid of them in 1948 to change to Motor Cycle Escort, one Bozo stood up in Parliment and said we should get rid of them Ireland doesn't have many decent horses lol, of course there was murders coming out with that statement as an excuse to get rid of them, Ireland being one of the top exporters of class horses around the World. They are still Known as the Blue Hussars today they have Blue motor cycles.
Bernard.
When and where is the Major General's inspection held? Would like to get down to that next year.
Ah, I thought as much. The Irish hunters are fantastic horses and indeed the ones in that "herd" look great. Indeed Ireland is a great exporter of quality horses; as I said, we have two of them, both from near Kilkenny, and we have many friends that have an Irish import. They are very Irish, most "Cavalry Blacks! are hunters from Ireland with some coming fom Yorkshire. After the I.R.A. bombed the regiment in 1982 we had all kinds of things gifted. In our troop we had a lovely big beast that had grown too big for it's owner, as all of the horses are named alphabeticaly he was called "Jumbo". Any way the previous owner asked if she could come and see how he was getting on, she was told that was fine if she could find him. After half an hour we took pitty and pointed him out! The best possible care, food and exercise had made him unrecognisable.

Too big for his owner, how big was that? One of my lads is 17.2, 1600 pounds.
