I have this Samurai mounted figure but no idea who made it. No marks at all on the base.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Brad,

It reminds me of the figures sold by DeAgostini, but the bases for those figures are hollowed out, not solid, and marked. The figures are also held to the bases with screws. But the style of the sculpt and the painting reminds me very much of DeAgostini. Maybe it comes from the same source?

I'm curious to see what the rest of the gang thinks.

Prost!

Brad,

Thanks. I beleive the horse is held to the base by screws. Will check tonight and post another photo.

Thanks again for your help.

Brad,
It looks like Somerset. Ron made a few variations of this figure over the years, I have a couple somewhere. I don't think he ever finished the line, but that is what it appears to be!

Tom,

Thanks. This is one of Mike's and since he gave me a whole bunch of Somerset, almost all India range, this makes sense.

Brad,

Good looking figure! Next year I will be focusing on a Samurai line, but don't know which line to go with. Any suggestions?

John, I don't collect Samurai. My repairman friend gave this to me to sell. If you're going to collect Samurai, I suggest First Legion.

As far as I know, they are no more Samourai at Somerset

There was/is a good range at East of India

as it seems they are out or going out of bzns, I made a PDF file, before there is nothing more to find, you can download at

Thanks. Don't think Somerset ever did many of these. East of India did have a very nice range. Too bad they're not in business anymore.

Confirmed somerset. These were test run series that never got off the ground. The painting and sculpt is a giveaway. I would not call them limited, but they are not plentiful either. Similar to what Ron did in the Zulu arena and the afghan series. I also went back and found my own!

One other comment, Ron also painted a few big game hunter items as I have an elephant hunt as well as a tiger attack (or I should say my son does, they are on his shelf).

Thanks from me, too, Tom! I didn't see a samurai series on the Somerset website, so I was very curious to hear more about this figure. Its rarity makes it that much more special.

No worries, if I get time, I can post a number of "Somerset" items from over the years that include an afghan prince, a sultan in "carriage" (forget the word of a hand carried cart), Big game hunter firing against a tiger as well as a charging Elephant!. Some of the early K&C Camels were sculpted by Ron at somerset. Quite an interesting history, the Samurai I only came across a few years ago from an ebay seller who was liquidating somerset items and in the midst of them was this samurai. I bought it and compared it to every Samurai I knew of including Ed Colarik and after that and asking Ron, determined what it was. Ron also did Zulu Wars which you used to only see at shows, they are also long sold out and a part of history.

I had a few of the Zulu, which I purchased from Ron in Chicago a few years ago. As I'm no longer collecting Zulu, don't have them anymore.

Thanks for that additional info, Tom! Adding that one to my files. I can see the resemblance in style.

And Brad, thanks again for sharing this piece with us!

Prost!
