What is the best way to tell if something is going to work with miniatures that are 1/32 scale (or 54 mm)??

What I mean is, I am building a lot of parts for my diorama from scratch and from items I find at dollar stores, etc. However, I am new to dioramas and am just trying to guess at the right scale (so I know I will get some things wrong). What is the best "rule of thumb" to use if I find something and am trying to figure out if it will work as a 1/32?

For example, in the dollar store I found a barn that would be great for converting (via painting it) into a WWII style building in Normandy. However, I cant tell by looking at it if it is too big or too small for 1/32. I bought it anyway (as it was only a $1), but next time, it would be good to know if there was a good rule of thumb to use to determine if it would work.

If there is, thanks for letting me know!

I appreciate it.

I would us a 1/32 scale figure to see if it look right

or if you don't want to carry a figure around make a mark on your wallet perhaps to the height of a figure and that may help.

Aggie99...

Your on safe ground with larger buildings like barns and churches etc as some are huge and some are small so, it depends on if it suits your eye. Best thing to do is forget the scale classification between 1/30 1/32 or as near as some say things are and just mix and match. I have used 1/28th scale buildings for dioramas and on the whole for churches barns etc they all work with every figure as barn doors church doors banks, town houses all can have larger windows and doors especially from the time periods we address pre WW1/2 buildings.

Just buy them and convert them to what you want and have fun and don't worry about the scales as much as its easy to make them work

Mitch and the others are right - trust your eye. Scale can be measured different ways, so the numbers are not always dependable - a guide at best. Either bring a figure with you when shopping (best way!) or something solid of the same height with the knees, waist and neck indicated.

Personally, I'd just keep a figure in my glove compartment and pull it out as needed. If you buy by mail-order, be sure you have the right to return it.
