Hi All,

I found this scottish piper figure in my grey army bin and tried to identify it. I think it was a Richard Newth Gibbs figure (lost the header) but could not identify the Scots regt. Helpful discussion with JB provided tantalizing clues but nothing definite. The tunic was unusual, single breasted without lace and unlike a doublet which led us to think pre 1855, but the blue bonnet headdress was not in any usual illustration of scottih pipers. So it was back to pleassant flipping thru cuttings from old magazines, references and presto! The details match those of the Scottish Horse Yeomanry.

I am now finalising it for painting as a toy figure.
The right arm was bent to fit the pipes. A new pipe was made from a steel nail. A new right hand was substituted. Cuffs were rebuilt. Cheeks were puffed up and beard added and later removed.

Blaster,

Nice figure. There is a good R. J Marrion colour illustration of a Scottish Horse piper (circa 1908-14) on the rear cover of Barlow & Smiths uniforms of the British Yeomanry Force 1794-1914 No.8-Lovat Scouts and Scottish Horse book, if you get stuck for paint reference material. Also a description of the uniforms within the texts.

Glossy finish I hope. Without the beard. The dark blue tunic should look a treat.

Hi Scott,

I have that reference. Also another one in Army and Navy Modelworld mag which show a piper wearing stockings with red, blue and green patterns. I agree with you that all my illustrations show only moustaches, no beard. The leather sporran was also unique. I resculpted the belt buckle to make it more prominent. The dark blue tunic was piped yellow. I added a chevron to the right sleeve as I want to make a pipe major. I've cleaned up the figure quite a bit and started painting and it will be in glossy finish.

In a further followup, these are the two reference pics that I am using for this figure. Both show very similar dress uniform despite an apparent 30+ years gap (1902 and 1936).
The main differences seem to be the tartan silk cord on the pipes, pipe cords, the stockings and the pattern of tartan lines on the kilt.

Painting in progress on the figure. Rgds Victor

The differences between illustrations are probably just artistic licence Victor.

Here's an illustration that might help - the tartan didn't change over the time period. The Piper wore the Tullibardine Tartan - the Murray of Atholl was the Regimental wear for the rest, ( in case you ever follow up with more later). Good that you cracked it - I never thought about the Yeomanary! jb

And I have finally finished this piece, Fully painted, glossed and mounted on a small wooden base. Thanks to JB fior encouragement and to all of you for looking. Rgds Victor
