STEP BY STEP CONSTRUCTION OF THE DIAMOND T 981 IN 1/30 SCALE

I began this project on January 5, 2014. I opted to model the open cab Diamond T 981. The 981 has the front winching capability (as compared to the 980 which can only pull from the rear). The distinct feature is an opening on the left side of the front bumper.

Using various media and scale parts is rather tricky. You need to get a bigger scale of a smaller vehicle in real life to match a 1/30 scale part. As an example, Garwood winches comes in same design (w/ slight modifications) in various sizes depending on the power required. The Garwood winch I used for this model came from the 1/35 scale M25 Dragon Wagon by Tamiya. The M25 carried a bigger Garwood model compared to the smaller Garwood winch the Diamond T 981 carried in real life. The Dragon Wagon tires were also a perfect match.

For parts, I used 1/32 Revel/Renwal M62 Wrecker, 1/32 FOV GMC Quad, 1/18 Century 21 WC50 Weapons Carrier, 1/25 AMT Mack Semi-tractor, 1/25 resin louvers (e-bay Australia), Archer Transfers. Stowage items are from Honor Bound, King & Country, FOV and scratch-built items such as "I" and "V" tow bars.

I will be posting the finished model late this week
