Over the summer, I have been working on a very large model of a Nile gunboat. I chose to model it on the Melik, though I have taken many liberties with its design for aesthetic and practical reasons. The hull is wood, the cabins are foamcore, the rails are metal, and the top deck is wood. I am about to leave for college, so it will not get any more work until winter break, but I think I am at around 50% completion. I still have to paint the upper deck, add the upper cabins and superstructure, add the stack (this one is only temporary) and the "mast", and add all of the other small details, paint retouching, rust effects, and matt finish.
I do need some advice, however, on these issues:
  • Historically, the armor on the top deck was full-body hight, and hindged. I thought that this might take away from any figures I place there, and that the hidges would be too bulky. Should I go full-height or waist-height?
  • There will be a canoy on top of the second deck, meaning there will be wire uprights every two inches on the side. What type of material should I use for the armor plating spaning these uprights? Balsa, posterboard, thin metal strips, plastic strips?
  • Does anyone know where I can buy 1/30, 1/32, etc... Maxim guns which are either on Naval mounts or could be put on them? Gardener guns would also work I think....
  • Does anyone knwo where I can buy 1/30, 1/32, etc... QF12 pounder 12 cwt naval guns on naval mounts? Anything similar woudl also work....
  • 5 inch naval howitzers woudl also work....
  • Does anyone know where I can get Royal Marine gunners?
Thanks,
Sandor

Wow that gunboat is great, well done. By the way how did you come by the Egyptian gun crew?
Best wishes,
Benjamin

For Royal Marines, albeit they are not gunners, check the Del Prado collection on Treefrog.

Looks great!^&cool^&cool Nice work, especially the detail work on the deck!:smile2:

Nice little scratch built project you have going there Sandor! ^&cool

Try looking at Dorset Soldiers on the All at sea pages where there are a number of boats with different guns etc shown. Castings can be purchased.

Best of luck.

Superb Gunboat Sandor {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Here is the Little Legion Maxim gun on the Naval mount, Mike would probably be able to supply you with RM gunners to go with it

Cheers

Martyn:)

Thanks Jeff! I think I may try those (still very much open to other suggestions- I am looking for a range of options^&grin).

Great build, Sandor! Now I expect you to bring it to the MFCA show next year, of course. We haven't had anyone exhibit anything in the toy soldier category for two years in a row.

I look forward to seeing your progress on this.

Prost!
Brad

Thanks!
Brad- I just might have to do that, provided I can finish it on my long winter break! What are the criteria? Can I use prepainted figures?

Awesome gunboat Sandor, great detail and I really like the deck planking. Well done and I am looking forward to seeing the end result when you have time to finish it.
