I picked up the Seehund as well as several of the other figures on Sunday and it's quite a masterful little model. I'm intending to pick up many more.

I had mentioned to Andy awhile back that it would be nice to see a British version although at the time I was thinking of a British Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) (first photo) but that probably would be a little too big, something possibly akin to an Eboat.

I was reviewing one of the K & C brochures this morning on the Seehund, which was a X Craft. X Craft had apparently been developed by the British, the X 3, to attack the Tirpitz (second and third photos)

The craft used against the Tirpitz were developed from a prototype, known as X 3, built by Commander Cromwell Varley, a former member of the Royal Navy who had set up a marine engineering business near Southampton. After her launch in 1942, the X 3 underwent a series of successful trials, and Vickers Armstrong Ltd was contracted to supply six production models by early 1943.

The brochure also mentions Italian midget submarines or manned submarines, called maiali (see photo). These were electrically propelled, with two crewmen in diving suits riding astride. They steered the torpedo at slow speed to the enemy ship. The detachable warhead was then used as a limpet mine. They then rode the torpedo away.

In operation, the Maiale torpedo was carried by another vessel (usually a normal submarine), and launched near the target. Most manned torpedo operations were at night and during the new moon to cut down the risk of being seen.

The idea was successfully applied by the Italian navy (Regia Marina) early in World War II and then copied by the British when they discovered the Italian operations. The official Italian name for their craft was Siluro a Lenta Corsa (SLC or "Slow-running torpedo"), but the Italian operators nicknamed it maiale (Italian for "pig"; plural maiali) because it was difficult to steer. The British copies were named "chariots".

In December 1941 the Decima Flottiglia MAS attacked the port of Alexandria with three maiali. The battleships HMS Valiant and Queen Elizabeth (and an 8,000-ton tanker) were sunk in shallow water putting them out of action for many months. According to accounts, the attack was performed even by diver Sergeant Salvatore Leone, from Taormina, Sicily. He was killed when the British "reacted furiously" to the attack, his body never being recovered.

Either of these would be interesting ideas for future issues and would probably be small enough for 1/30 scale. I'm sure that Andy will do more with the German Navy so here's hoping he will add to it with a British X Craft or a Maiali. The range could have lots of possibilities.

Thanks Brad for the info. I got the seehund a few weeks ago, and I also like it very much, looks good along side my jetty. Need to pick up a few more figures.

Brad i really agree with your ideas for new sea war themed figures and ships..the Maiale could be cheap to produce and to sell and represents one of the highlights of the italian navy in WWII..i hope to see other "raids" themed figures by the way..one of them is Saint Nazaire..Commandos and more fighting Kriegsmarine troops..and regarding Commandos lately i read about Jack Churchill...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill
Now i dream about a figure of him with the Claymore!:)

I was really impressed with how large this thing is- as well as the aircraft. The pictures just don't do a very good job of showing that. They certainly seem well worth the price.

Either way, the air force and navy lines are a skip for me- nothing wrong with them, just don't fit with my collecting agenda right now.

Here is the start of my German Navy Collection - I love this (SL) KM 10 - SEEHUND ! I really believe it is a gem and a future TOP COLLECTABLE FROM K&C !

This mini-sub is a great stand alone piece as well as a great addition to any Kreigsmarine display. Mark my words you want to get this release and hang on to it - two years from now - as this range grows - it will be one of those "I should have bought it at back then...."

I am really looking forward to collecting this new K&C range. :)

I will fully agree with you Ron. There are certain releases that you just say yourself "I better get that," and this is one of them.

I think a Naval series will have a lot of appeal. In that way Andy is brilliant. He's gotten people thinking with the US Navy range and this range about ships, something I'm sure that most of us thought was not possible. I'm sure we'll see great things in the future.

go ahead and put me on the top of the waitlist for when you put your German Sub on ebay in 18 months. :D:D:D I just know it's coming.

Kindest regards
CC

Nice piece of German war machine

I have a technique question for K&C or somebody else

Why this U-Boat has a green camouflage color painted? It seems to me that there is no reason for that color when you are under water..

Regards

These smaller subs do not have the endurance to stay underwater as long as the larger uboats, so they needed the camo to break up the silhouette when they are surfaced to protect against naval and arial spotters.

Where did you get the reference X Craft photo? I posted some shots of the wreck and late war X-craft from the IWM Duxford to try and stimulate Andy's productive mind but so far to no avail.

Thats excellent Ron! I did the same display with mine. I put it in front of my jetty. Just have to add more figure's later.

I assume your question was for me. The first photo (not the book) is from a Wikipedia article. See here. The craft shown is actually X 24, not X 3, which was the one that attacked the Tirpitz.

I haven't come across any picture of a Seehund with that camo. My guess is that Andy is taking some artistic license (i.e. it looks better than plain grey) or maybe it has something to do with being hauled on a towing trolley. Technically, it's not in the water. There is a good web site for U-boat info at www.uboat.net and http://www.uboat.net/types/seehund.htm

This is a very cool model, but you really have to see it in person! I was impressed when I saw the show photos, but I was really suprised when I saw it in person! Andy also did a great job on the box!

I would grab one while they are still available if I had any interest in this line.:)

Nice looking display. Good idea for a separate thread. Who'll go first? :)

while the quayside looks nice, I think some sort of Subpen scenic would be in order?

I also wanted to mention that Andy did tell me in NYC that he was working on having a GERMAN GREY Opel Blitz ! :D

I have found that the Kriegsmarine is a fantastic set to collect and I will add to my set over the next year or so ...BUT how about some ROYAL NAVY!!!!!!:D:D
