I,ve seen some members on this board selling retired K&C pieces on ebay, my question is are these "doubles", or are you selling older sets to have money to buy new sets?
This is not a slam against selling, but I was curious as to why, if it was not a duplicate, why you would want to sell something that in the future you may want back. And find it hard to come buy.

Gary, I have in the past sold a few which were doubles and am tapped out of those but I must say I have given thought to selling some of the more prized K&C sets I have in order to fund other set purchases. Naturally what drives this consideration is pure economics. I can sell one retired set and purchase possibly up to five new sets. It has just been a thought for me that I haven't ruled out but am very hesitant to act upon.

I only sell doubles to buy more K&C sets. I only once traded a piece for another because I had a hard time finding that piece. Now I want that piece back. Oh well.

A lot of the stuff that I've sold I've done for a friend and believe me I wish I could have kept those pieces for myself. Right now, I have a Patton command car going but I can't afford to buy one of those. I have never sold anything that I didn't have a double of. Since I'm collecting, it doesn't make sense for me to do so. But I know many people who were prescient enough to buy doubles and I tip my hat to them. I also know others who just don't have the room for everything and prefer the newer items so they're selling off the older items to make room.

Gary:

Interesting question, I am very picky so most often when I see a piece I

really like I buy several so I can inspect evey inch:D and grab the one I

want. Since I display in 3 major areas....with a couple of additional showcases

stashed in yet other rooms often I display several of the same pieces.

I'm also over my limit (according to the wife) so when something new pops

up something better be going or I'm eating at the Varisity!

I have several retired fields I am hunting and have spent the yearly budget of

Malawi so far in my attempts of obtaining them.

I also maintain a retired price index so I'm aware of the value of retired items

I sell.

Retired items are certainly not cheap, and keeping up with current releases

can be an adventure!

I've been selling a couple of my older sets that had been in a closet. I reallly don't like not to have things out, plus I needed to raise some money for Chicago. The older is not as good as the new and I've gotten over the feeling that I have to have everything in the old.

I have sold or traded several older KC issues because I prefer the newer, more detailed work and because of economic issues. As was mentioned, selling older stuff finances newer stuff. Have never regretted parting with any of the older sets. Have never felt I must have all the issues. I buy what I like and hope someone does not due the 1745 Jacobite rising in quality matte figures for then all bets would be off. -- lancer

I have also sold sets I have collected both here on the forum and on the seconsdary market. My wife is a very patient and understanding person - she would have to be to have stayed with me for 39 years :D. However, she has suggested that I have enough hobbies/collectibles, and as I feel the need to have more I should consider selling some of the older items in order to finance my current "need to have" figures. I have also reached the conclusion that I can not have everything I want, nor do I have the room for everything I want. A short time ago I made a decision to just collect the K&C Crusader range. I have always liked the figures, and frankly making the scenery for dioramas is easier, "just add sand" ;).

Since I have made that decision I have sold off my collection of Conte Civil War, Alamo, Vikings, and War Lord sets. I have also sold off my K&C AWI sets. I am now in the process of selling off my John Jenkins Designs sets. I find that I really don't miss them. I had the chance to own and appreciate them and that's enough for me.

Looking forward to meeting you at the show or at the LaQuinta. Oh by the way . . . I am bringing all of my JJD sets to the show to sell or trade :)

Same here.I really want everything i buy so i wouldn't sell any of it,as a collector it goes against my policy!;)

Spoken like a true husband with an understanding wife!

We rule the home and do as we please..........as long as its OK with the

I looked at my stuff and asked "Am I intereted in displaying high quality pieces" or do I follow my collector instinct and go for one of everything. I chose the former. I was fortunate enough to buy some pieces early enough and have seen a nice return but the "windfall profit" was just used to turn around and buy newer pieces with better detail. I tend to buy with certain scenes in mind, although some items are like the "impulse buy" of the M12 at last year's Chicago show. I have neither money nor space to get all of the nice K&C items, so I have to pick and choose.

I do the same with my 1/35th models. When Dragon or Tasca puts out a really nice new Sherman, the old Tamiya or earlier Dragon versions go on the sale block. I still have more 1/35th Shermans than anyone can reasonably build.

Just one person's approach.

Gary B.

The beauty of collecting is each person can pick and choose his methods

and style.

Some want one of everything, some collect series that interest them, its

all a matter of choice.

I have always been drawn to like new items (I don't use Mint as nothing

usually is perfect).

I never used to sell anything, I always thought I might never find it again.

One day I read a book from a baseball memorabilia dealer called Mr. Mint.

This guy was an appliance salesmen that one day went to a card show. He

enjoyed it so much he borrowed $25,000 and put an ad in the paper looking

for Baseball items! He quickly spent the $25,000 photographed everything he

bought selected a few of the best items and sold everything else to a few

dealers he knew at wholesale prices to recover his $25,000. He did this over

and over again photographing each item every time to create a providence

for future sales of the items. At the end of the year he held an auction of the

items he held back and did quite well.

He started the next year with $100,000 and became one of the most famous

"Buyers of Baseball Memorabilia" ever. When Carroll Rosenbloom died he

bought a lot of his collection from Georgia Frontiere.

He had many wonderful adventures and found a ton of wonderful items

sitting in forgotten warehouses and old stores that might have just turned

to dust if people didn't know that Mr Mint had $100,000 ready in cash for

quality items.

He enjoyed the hunt more then the possesion of an item. Sure a Babe Ruth

autographed baseball is nice in your hand.....but how many more are out

there sitting in someones attic waiting to be discovered?

After I finished his book I began selling an item or two here and there, and

before long I was finding more items then I eve thought was possible.

Just about anything you can think of.......is sitting somewhere still in its

original box waiting for someone to discover!

Funny thing John and I were just talking about this. I bought some doubles to finance the hobby. Something I was never able to do before. Then there is the financial scare:eek: Ah well. I suffer from I want! Like I want it all! Now I have to rethink things again. Of all the WWII stuff I will keep the Bulge and LAH stuff.......errrr...who knows.

Sometimes I see something and it is cool and shiny then off to the races! So anything goes. Everyone gets to decide for themselves

The toy train business is a lot less civilized.

I like it all really. I like the shiny stuff and matte. The old and new.

I have bought thins swore I would never get rid of it, then Oh look! Elvis! I have an LAH 32 I did not think I would seel now with the new set coming Who hoo!;)
