Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, a 23 year old madman gets into a school, at 8.30am, and shoots 12 children, between 12 and 15 years old, 10 of them young girls. He does it shooting them through the head, using 2 revolvers. He wounds others who tryed to escape. When he is finally wounded by a policeman's shot he kills himself. Apparently this animal had been the victim of bullying at the same school many years earlier.
I have a 9 year old son, the thought of one day losing him is just unbearable. Just thinking things like this can happen in our societies (yes it was in Brazil but it could be here tomorrow) makes me fret. I can relate to the parents' suffering and feel so sad and moved for the loss of such young lives.
How can anyone even contemplate killing young children? I am reading the History of WWII by Martin Gilbert, and there are numerous accounts of children, even months old, whether being Jewish or not, being massacred by the Nazis, many shot at point blank and not just sent to the gas chambers. How is this possible? What goes on inside these people's minds? Do we have a breaking point beyond which things like this can happen? I am at loss here. How can this be stopped? Can someone enlighten me?

There has to be better screening and treatment of mental illness. I have no idea what kind of health care is available in Brazil. The hand gun issue doesn't even apply in this case because it's Brazil. The shooter claimed a Muslim religion but his sister claims he wasn't even a good Muslim. Could it be a combination of mental illness, poverty, "religion", and available weapons?
How does a society screen possible mentally ill people from just loudmouths or eccentrics without being oppressive?

"...There are now fears of a backlash against Muslims. Brazil is huge country, a real melting pot where people from all races, and different religious beliefs and cultural origins, dwell in harmony. It has been so for centuries, without the kind of clashes that we see elsewhere in the world. Our people are peaceful, and those who were not born here, are perfectly engaged in this same spirit. I believe that we do intend to remain as such."

I took some courses in Brazilian history and remember this claim.

odd people do odd things and a variety of reasons which, are usually spurious are given as explanations. It happens everywhere crackerjacks can get guns and thats a recipe for disaster. Not the first and won't certainly be the last.

It can never be stopped no matter what protocols are in place

"It happens everywhere crackerjacks can get guns and thats a recipe for disaster."

That sums it up best for me.

Crackerjacks + all the guns sold in the world = a disaster waiting to happen.....................

A very sad reflection on a sad and cruel world. This happens in countries across the World including my own. Its a despicable act to kill innocent people, ruin the lives of hundreds of relatives just because the person is so full of spite they can't just go off and kill themself but have to take others with them, words fail me to be honest, can only offer my deepest sympathy to everyone mourning the murder of those innocent children. They have at the very least gone to a better place than we are in.

Hello Viriato:

Do you recall the horrific attack on the Russian schoolhouse back in 2004 which left over 350 children dead?? It's a mad mad world my friend. I have the same thoughts too- especially when I read about violence towards children in wars like WW2.

Being a former US Soldier, we are taught to train and train so that you can adequately and calmly respond to any calamity. My wife and I own a daycare and I run through various "what if" scenarios to train the women who work there on how to respond to child abuse, fire at the daycare, etc. One day, it dawned on me that we needed a contingency plan for how to deal with a shooter. It was a very very sobering thing for me to discuss that with the women and the local police department. Standing there and telling them to yell at the children on the playground to scatter should a gunman come outside to the playground area so that they do not make themselves a tighter target group was a really trying moment for me.

How? By dehumanizing the victim. If you can convince yourself that the person you want to kill is not a person, not the same as you, not from your nation, tribe, clan, race, etc, then it's easy to do. And you don't have to be crazy. You can be stupid, hate-filled, intolerant and ignorant, and be perfectly sane.

I don't have any documentary evidence but I imagine that the town drunk and the village idiot were NOT part of "a well regulated militia" back in the 1700s.
