Shadow boxes/display cases (3 Viewers)

I don't know if anyone thought of this yet, but craigslist always has used display cases for sale. Most of these come from stores that go out of business, so you can find a wide variety at very resonable prices.

I have one but found it too small to display anything more than 2 or 3 pieces of armour. That is why I went to Solutions and bought a similar display cabinet which is 23" wide vs the Ikea cabinet which is 15" wide. The extra 8" makes a big difference in laying out armour.

However, if you want to highlight one or 2 pieces of armour and a few soldiers on a 12" x 12" diorama base, the Ikea cabinet is excellent. It is cheaper and better made than the Soulutions cabinet. If anyone wants, I can place some pieces in the Ikea cabinet tomorrow and you can see for yourselves.

terry,

Thanks Gus

I was at IKEA yesterday to purchase the Bertby case. I think that for very limited space, it is a good compromise and I might pick one up later. Because when I reviewed the selection, I came across a case called "KLINGSBO" which was too new to be in the catalog. It is much bigger and offers enough display space per level for a mini-diorama. It looks very solid, the metal and glass make it look very light and help focus on the collectibles. I am not very much in favor of the black iron look and the rounded feet, but latter might add stability.

This cabinet is also high enough to bring the top two shelves to eye-height. This is certainly a challenge with Bertby which is really too low.

The Detolf we were discussing has space 15-1/2" wide by 14" deep and each shelf is 13" high. There are 4 shelves including the floor. The Klingsbo cabinet you found is slightly larger at 17-1/2" wide and 15-1/2" deep with 5 shelves - all well above the floor. The shelves are stronge - they hold 55 lbs vs 13 lbs.

The compromise is the shelf height of approximately 10" and the cost which is almost double but in my opinion well worth it.

Good call Andanna. I might get one if I can find a spot for it.

Gentle Friends,

I have no experience with IKEA curio cabinets, therefore I have the following question: Are the shelves in the IKEA cabinets adjustable? That is to say, can the shelf height be adjusted to allow for the addition of more shelves or to allow for higher contents on a single shelf? In my experience, adjustable shelves are almost a necessity. They provide for a maximum of flexibility and I would view their absence as a major limitation.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

I think that depends on what cabinet you purchase Pat, I have 2 Ikea cabinets that do and 1 that doesn't.

If you get the bertby bookcase one, you can drill extra holes & the extra glass shelves are $15ea. Think its the bertby anyway.

Here are some photos of the Detolf cabinet from Ikea. I had not used it for armour display until now. In my opinion, it is too small and the glass shelves are too thin to hold heavy armour pieces. The King Tiger alone almost fills the shelf in length. The glass shelves are much thinner than the glass shelves in my armour display cabinets. You could use the Detolf to make a small display but Andannas suggestion is way better.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the information! I thought that might be the case, but if a collector has never previously purchased a curio cabinet, then I would certainly recommend he/she make certain the cabinet has adjustable shelves. When you spend money to display a nice and growing collection, you will appreciate the flexibility adjustable shelves provide.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Thanks Rob.

I should clean up the computer room and do some displays.

Very nice Terry. I have that cabinet but I use it the living room for knick knacks.

I was thinking more along the lines of this for some of my collection.

There. That's better.

Is that the Bergsbo cabinet from Ikea. It is a good one. I have seen it at Ikea. The shelves are deep at almost 16" and 4 of the 6 shelves are adjustable. It is nice but pricey. a very good cabinet to display armour/soldiers. (I looked for a few years before buying the cabinets I have - I also needed lots of space between shelves for buildings)
